Perhaps you want to start a TikTok account, but your parents said no.
That’s a bummer. But they do have a point. Navigating the exciting world of TikTok (and all social media platforms) can be fun…and dangerous.
Here’s a safety guide for your TikTok account:
1. Make your account private
No, you’re not an adult yet, unfortunately.
Making your account private means, only people you approve can follow you and see your videos.
• Go to Settings & Privacy → Privacy → Private Account
• Turn it ON
2. Be careful of what you share
Do not post personal details!
• Your full name
• Your school name
• Your address or phone number
3. Only communicate with friends & family
Never talk to strangers online!
• Set comments to friends or no one
• Turn off direct messages if you don’t know a person
• Block someone who sends mean or weird messages
• Go to the person’s page (the one being mean or weird).
• Tap the three dots at the top of the screen.
• Tap “Block”
• Press “Yes” to confirm.
4. Don’t click on weird links
If someone sends you a message or comment with a link, DO NOT click on it. It could be a trick or a scam.
5. Turn on Comment Filters
• You can block mean and nasty words from showing up in your comments.
• Go to Settings & Privacy → Privacy → Comments → Filter specific keywords
6. Use Screen Time Limits
• TikTok has a timer to help you take breaks.
• Go to Settings & Privacy → Screen Time
