To mark World Environment Day (WED) today, Port Moresby Nature Park launched the BSP Trash to Treasure Sculpture Festival, an inspiring and creative initiative that transforms plastic waste into powerful artistic expressions.
The festival runs from June 5 to July 5, aligning with this year’s WED global theme: “End Plastic Pollution.”
Proudly sponsored by BSP Financial Group Limited, the festival aims to raise awareness about plastic pollution through innovation and creativity.
Visitors to the park can explore a series of larger-than-life sculptures crafted from solid waste materials collected across the city.
These pieces are designed and assembled by passionate student volunteers from the University of Papua New Guinea, working closely with the park’s Marketing and Site Departments.
Spanning five weekends, the event will host Family Fun Days each Saturday, featuring fun activities such as environmental crafts, informative signage, and interactive experiences aimed at promoting environmental stewardship across all age groups.
As the leading wildlife and conservation park in the nation, Port Moresby Nature Park is thrilled to utilize art as a means to engage the community and encourage proactive measures against plastic pollution.
Through this initiative, the park aims to be recognized as a leader in environmental sustainability and education.
Port Moresby Nature Park is home to native species including tree kangaroos, cassowaries, and crocodiles.
It is also an internationally accredited zoo under the Zoo & Aquarium Association of Australasia (ZAA), known for its dedication to conservation, animal welfare, and educational outreach.
The Trash to Treasure festival reflects the park’s broader mission to protect PNG’s unique biodiversity while empowering communities to take meaningful action for the planet.
Visitors are encouraged to be part of this event and witness how discarded materials can be turned into treasures.
