The Physiotherapy Department at Port Moresby General Hospital (PMGH), alongside the University of Papua New Guinea’s School of Medicine and Health Sciences and the University of Otago’s Department of Anatomy, successfully hosted its inaugural Pain & Clinical Anatomy Workshop from August 4th to 6th.
Led by Dr. Jerin Mathew, neuroscientist and clinical anatomy lecturer from the University of Otago, the workshop focused on advanced pain science, anatomical precision, and multidisciplinary approaches to pain management.
This initiative is part of the department’s broader strategy to establish a Pain Management Clinic by 2028, in collaboration with the Anaesthetic Department and other clinical disciplines.
Participants explored both pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments, emphasizing the critical role of clinical anatomy in diagnosis and treatment planning.
The workshop also highlighted opportunities for integrating research into clinical practice, aiming to enhance patient outcomes and promote evidence-based care in Papua New Guinea.
This workshop marks a crucial step in strengthening professional capacity and fostering future clinical and research collaboration in pain management.
