Papua New Guinea recorded 2 new COVID-19 deaths in the last 24 hours ending 12 midday on Tuesday April 13, increasing the total number of COVID-19 related deaths for the country to 71. Both deaths are males, ages 50 and 70, from the Jiwaka province, increasing the number of deaths in Jiwaka province to four. The Pacific Islands Forum is calling on Japan to re-think plans to dump toxic waste in the ocean. The Japanese government has announced plans to release treated water from the destroyed Fukushima nuclear power plant into the Pacific. The Forum’s Secretary General, Dame Meg Taylor, said under the provisions of the treaty of Rarotonga, the region’s leaders are determined to keep the Blue Pacific free of radioactive waste.
