On Wednesday morning, the U.S. government, via the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), delivered essential oxygen supply items and medical equipment to Port Moresby General Hospital (PMGH) during a ceremony. They delivered equipment included laryngoscopes, thermal imaging cameras, pulse oximeters, oxygen concentrators, and various other supplies. These items will facilitate the management and treatment of medical conditions that necessitate oxygen therapy, such as severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS). Nino Nadiradze, the USAID Country Representative, highlighted that the recent donation underscores the United States' enduring commitment to bolstering health systems, improving healthcare outcomes, and increasing access to quality medical services in Papua New Guinea (PNG). “USAID’s investment in health systems has been a cornerstone of the United States’ fifty-year partnership with Papua New Guinea.” “We take pride in providing PNG’s healthcare professionals with the essential tools, supplies, and knowledge needed to save lives and ensure the highest standard of care.” Dr. Henao Asa, Acting Director of Medical Services at PMGH, emphasized the importance of this support. “USAID’s assistance will significantly enhance our capacity to deliver critical care to patients in need.” “This is a crucial step toward improving healthcare outcomes, not only in Port Moresby, but throughout all of PNG.” The equipment and supplies were provided through USAID’s Global Health Supply Chain Program-Procurement and Supply Management (GHSC-PSM) project, which is managed by FHI 360. Another step for martial arts as Kung Fu Instructor Andrew Molen was given much-deserved recognition for receiving the title of ‘Sifu’ by his teacher, Steven Ngandang Sifu of the PNG Shaolin Kung Fu Wushu School. This took place on January 11, 2025, during East Gate Karate Academy’s open day, a day which witnessed martial artists coming together to support each other and promote their community's values. Molen has been training martial arts and competing in combat sports for the past twenty years, and the endorsement of his peers, Senesis Byron Chan, Chief Instructor of the Dragon Karanas Mixed Martial Arts Club and Julius Piku, the Chief Instructor of East Gate Karate Academy, gave him much-deserved recognition to pursue his aspirations of creating a club and carrying on the martial arts lineage. Sensei Byron stated that Sifu Andrew has years of training and expertise as both a martial artist and a combat sport athlete, and he was pleased to honor Molen's accomplishments. As part of this endorsement, Sensei Byron bestowed Molen the rank of Second Dan Black Belt in the International Dragon Full Contact Self Defense Sports Federation system. Molen will also lead Kung Fu and Wushu training at Sensei Chan's club. Sensei Julius also expressed his support for Molen and thanked Sensei Byron for continuing to support and promote martial arts amidst his busy schedules. “At East Gate Karate, we are always delighted to launch people off to a good start and see them become successful in their endeavors.” He stated that martial arts have a vital part in forming people's character as they face various life situations. However, martial artists have challenges in their work due to a lack of resources, support, and, most critically, cheap space to run their programs. "We also produce athletes for sports, but without good venues, we are unable to contribute fully in that way." He believes it is always beneficial to collaborate with other martial artists and support one another throughout trials like these. Martial artists and their clubs should not be divided by style, politics, or personal ambition. Sensei Byron also announced the formation of the World Taekwondo Organization (WTO) in Papua New Guinea, where he has been named President. He is also the President of Japan Shotokan Karate-Do International in PNG. Sensei Byron and his club are linked to various international organizations for martial arts, self-defense, and combat sports. These associations aim to create pathways and opportunities for his students and members. Meanwhile Steven Tommy, Senior Instructor of Dragon Karanas Mixed Martial Arts Club and Vice President of WTO PNG, also received a Third Dan award during the event. Other students also received new ranks after a recent grading in 2024. Sensei Byron encourages young people to practice martial arts to develop discipline and character while using their free time wisely. He urges martial artists and style leaders to collaborate and enhance their skills. The meeting marked the start of classes for East Gate Karate Academy and Dragon Karanas MMA for 2025. Youngster Ziggy Yominao, recently launched his clothing brands ‘Fword’ & ‘White Collar’ in a small presentation held in front of his house at Niu Street, East Boroko, Port Moresby city. The modest event kicked off with song performances by LDK, stand-up comedy and later a mini-fashion show called the Sunset Show. Yominao explained that the clothing designs are inspired by his personal experiences. “My designs are based on what I’ve experienced in life as a youth.” “I communicate my experiences through the designs so people can relate to.” He added the clothing was designed with the intention to make people feel confident about themselves. When asked why the show was held within his residence, Yominao responded stating that he wanted his audience to have a feeling of involvement. “When you enter my residence, you become part of who I am; you get to see who I am – experience my thoughts and my art.” He elaborated that the event was called Sunset Show because his house has great sunset views. “I wanted my audience to experience the sunset the way I experience it.” Yominao has more shows planned and intends to present them in a way that is unique to him as an artist. “These events are not bringing the feeling of showcasing something; it is more like, you as an individual must get involved to know and understand what is happening.”

Chairman of Teaching Service Commission, Samson Wangihomie, gave a strong message to the Provincial Education Divisions recently, calling for all teachers leave fares to be paid. Wangihomie stated that it was a must that teachers be getting their leave fares as they are entitled to it for their services. He further explained that the responsibility of ensuring that teachers receive their leave fares is with the Provincial Governments. When asked to clarify why there was a delay with teacher's leave fares, Wangihomie suggested that insufficient funding could be the cause. He further clarified another reason could be that when it comes to married couples who work in the public service, only one partner receives leave fares. "If both the husband and the wife are in public service, only person re- ceives leave fares." He added that teachers not receiving their rightful payments creates issues for the provinces and for the country. "Letting teachers go unpaid in their leave fares, becomes a liability to the state." "Provinces are having a lot of liabilities which are adding up to millions - entitlements such as repatriations after retirement and outstanding salaries." Approximately 70, 000 teachers are expected to resume duties on January 20th, 2025. That includes nearly 2500 new graduates and new commencement teachers to teach within the various teaching sectors- Early Childhood Education, Primary, High/Secondary, Vocational, National Schools of Excellence, FODE and Inclusive Education for the 22 provinces.

Prime Minister James Marape has hailed the successful implementation of an off-grid solar project that is improving the lives of thousands of Papua New Guineans in rural areas. The effort, a collaboration between the governments of Papua New Guinea and Australia, has begun to install 8,700 solar panels in houses, schools, and community buildings throughout 18 villages in Morobe's Huon Gulf District. The Prime Minister described the initiative as a game changer for rural development, bridging the gap between urban and remote populations by bringing reliable, sustainable energy to areas that previously lacked access to electricity. "This off-grid solar project is providing light and hope in some of our most distant villages. For far too long, many of our rural communities have been kept in the dark, dependent on expensive and unreliable energy sources. Papua New Guinea Cancer Relief Society (PNGCRS) at Angau Memorial Hospital, Lae, Morobe Province, is continuing the work of carrying out awareness during January – the month of Cervical Cancer Awareness. For both communities and corporate houses, PNGCRS has reached close to 2, 000 individuals from 28 sessions conducted since August 2024 to January 2025. Speaking to PNG HAUSBUNG, PNGCRS stated that the main focus of these awareness sessions was to educate women on prevention and early detection of cervical cancer but there were also other benefits. “At the end of each session, we try to ensure attendees are educated on the following areas: Impact of Cancer: Global and National; Common Misconceptions and Facts about Cancer; Cancer cell growth differs from normal cell growth. Early signs and symptoms of common malignancies (cervical, breast, and oral). Treatment and When to Seek Help; Causes and Risk Factors for Cervical, Breast, and Mouth Cancer; Prevention Measures - The significance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Regular exercise and a balanced diet; Referral Pathways - Where to go for help if they come across anything concerning.” “Our key message is that cancer is curable when presented early to the hospital.” PNGCRS awareness sessions have reached more than 20 communities and over 1500 individuals. “We’ve reached 1, 775 individuals so far; during some these sessions, breast examinations are conducted on women.” “We’ve examined 260 women and detected lumps in 28 of them.” “We then refer these women straight to the National Cancer Center at Angau for further screening.” Angau's Well Women's Clinic is currently offering free VIA screening for cervical cancer. The clinic is open every day and the service is free.

Destiny however, causes their bond to be tested overtime revealing who is meant to be the lion king. Mufasa: The Lion King would be great addition to the Lion King franchise if only live action remakes, sequels and villain-hero backstories did not become an overused trope these last few years. It seems the only redeemable quality of Mufasa was a couple of its songs, composed by the talented Lin-Manuel Miranda. “I Always Wanted a Brother” has fortunately wormed its way into the ears of many audiences for good and bad reasons. The film uses the cliché storyline of underdog to hero and does a poor attempt of developing a relationship between Mufasa and Taka (aka Scar). Not to mention, the sarcasm and random jokes here and there by characters Timon and Pumba seems pretty forced. On the other hand, Disney took great effort in honoring the memory of late James Earl Jones. But that’s just what it is – a tribute to the original great voice of Mufasa. It seems Disney’s creative juices were running low and needed a desperate attempt to tug at the audiences’ heartstrings. Perhaps the timing of Mufasa wasn’t right; with the excessive development of cliché overused plots, identifiable character tropes, predictable endings and a constant disappointment of live action remakes, played a part in the film’s deflated reception. Obviously, adults would have an opinion, but children wouldn’t care. Hence, if you’re an adult looking for something fresh and entertaining to watch, I don’t recommend Mufasa: The Lion King. It’s for the kids. I’ll give this movie a solid 3/10.
