The National Weather Service (NWS) is keeping an eye on a natural weather phenomenon called a tropical depression that could form near Queensland, Australia. As a result, the Highlands Region will have severe rainfall over the next 24-48 hours, while Momase will see further rainfall throughout the weekend. Furthermore, strong or gusty winds will blow along the Papuan coastline from Western to Milne Bay Provinces. A tropical depression is a low-pressure system that develops into a tropical cyclone. During this time, rainfall is expected to increase, as will strong or gusty winds. The coastal waters of Western to Morobe Provinces, including the Coral Sea, are expected to be affected by strong winds, resulting in rough seas. Seamen and small vessel operators in these provinces must heed this caution before venturing out to sea. The National Disaster Centre (NDC), the office in charge of disasters and emergencies, is providing an early warning to the affected provinces, as well as neighboring provinces, to take precautionary measures during this period. The NDC will continue to work with NWS to offer additional information on this natural event until it subsides.

The Shotokan Karate Budokai (SKB) has announced the appointment of Julius Piku Sensei as the new Head of Style for its PNG Branch as endorsed by Trevor Roberts Sensei, founder of the SKB style and the current Chief Instructor of the style at its Honbu dojo (headquarters) in Brisbane, Australia. A significant achievement in the line of committed practitioners of SKB and Shotokan Karate as a whole, this appointment is particularly fitting, given the long-standing relationship between Julius Sensei and his predecessor, Carl Mari ‘Bera Sensei. Mari 'Bera has mentored Piku since he was a teenager, and he has thrived under his direction. Piku, known for his technical prowess and tactical expertise in the ring, is not only a karate champion in PNG, but also the most capped PNG Karate elite athlete, having represented his country on a number of international occasions. The film being an Indian production incorporates Hindi language into the dialogue which is admirable as it adds a touch of cultural authenticity to a contemporary film. Although the film gives a good message, I think the film should have also depicted the main character learning the importance of failure and how to handle setbacks. This film teaches a good lesson to kids to be studious but also keep in mind that they are more than just their marks. I’d give it a solid 9/10.

U.S. Ambassador Ann Marie Yastishock presented rare WWII photos to the Governor General Sir Bob Dadae today Tuesday 28th January 2025. The photographs were taken in 1942, while US General Douglas MacArthur resided in the Government House commanding the Southwest Pacific Theatre. The presentation of these images highlighted the duration of Papua New Guinea's collaboration with the United States. This was the first event to kick off the U.S. Embassy's celebration of 50 Years of Papua New Guinean Independence and 50 Years of diplomatic relations between our countries. U.S Ambassador Yastishock, stated that shared values between the United States and Papua New Guinea are not just ingrained within the governments but also within the people. "These images are not just relics of the past; they are powerful symbols of our shared commitment to freedom, resilience, and the pursuit of peaceful democracy," said Ambassador Yastishock. Two of the four photographs given illustrate the Government House in 1942, one from the outside and one showing the furniture inside the mansion when MacArthur lived there. The following two images show General MacArthur with the Papuan Constabulary Guard on Christmas Day in 1942. The General Macarthur Memorial Foundation in Norfolk, Virginia has gifted these rare images. They are unique and have never been displayed before in the world. "I consider bringing these photos to you as bringing them to their rightful home," said Ambassador Yastishock to the Governor General at his residence where the photographs were originally taken. As the country plans for its golden jubilee, the United States and Papua New Guinea concentrate on the shared history and continued relationship. Jacks of PNG opened its new shop at WaterFront, Downtown in Port Moresby city today, bringing the total number of shops to seven. In spite of challenges faced in the previous year, in which a shop was burned down within Stop ‘N’ Shop, Rainbow during Black Wednesday’s riots, the new outlet’s opening demonstrated Jacks of PNG’s resilience amidst the country’s tumultuous events. Speaking to PNG HAUSBUNG, Retail Shop Manager, Timothy Eddie was pleased seeing many regular customers coming as well as new ones. “A lot of our customers were eager to know about the shop’s location.” “Some even expressed delight knowing that services were now closer to their residence which was convenient – particularly for the working class who reside Downtown.” “It was now easy for them to purchase attire for formal events or daily wear.” He added that Jacks of PNG’s team is currently working on a project in Kokopo. The shop employs twelve staff; six are newly employed - three males and three females. Jacks of PNG also has outlets at Lae, Madang and Mt. Hagen.

Education Minister Lucas Dekena recently announced that remote schools in the country will receive greater support financially as part of the Marape/Rosso Government’s 2025 Free Education Policy. This geographically influenced reform uses the PNG Access Remote Index (PARI) to distribute funds, enabling remote schools to obtain necessary resources in order to provide quality education to students. Dekena said this is due to the 2012 tuition fee grants that were distributed evenly without taking into consideration the accessibility of schools in different locations. “This policy will adjust to reflect the locality of schools in 2025," he said. Based on a study conducted by the 2024 Department of Education, schools were categorized into six groups of accessibility: Highly Accessible, Accessible, Moderately Accessible, Remote, Very Remote and Extremely Remote. With this information, schools in hard-to-reach locations will receive more financial support compared to urban schools in the Nation’s Capital. He said 80% of funds allocated will be strictly for operational grants, while 20% will cater for essential science and mathematics resources. Fifteen employees from the Department for Community Development and Religion were recently honored in a farewell ceremony as they transition into retirement.
