The East New Britain (ENB) Governor's Softball Tournament, sponsored by Governor Michael Marum, ended on a high note on Wednesday, September 17, at Queen Elizabeth Park in Rabaul town. The tournament, which coincided with Papua New Guinea's (PNG) 50th Independence Anniversary and the 31st Anniversary of the Twin Volcanic Eruption, featured exciting matches in both the men's and women's divisions. Ok Tedi Mining Limited (OTML) is continuing to improve the lives of Papua New Guineans through its Infrastructure Tax Credit (ITCS) Scheme. Speaking at the official opening of the Tabubil Telefomin road, Ok Tedi Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Kedi Ilimbit, said Ok Tedi is 100% PNG Owned company and will continue to deliver infrastructure development to Papua New Guinea in the coming years. Prime Minister James Marape officially attended the opening and also launched the Telefomin-Oksapmin- Kopiago road construction with a ground-breaking ceremony and unveiled the Telefomin town masterplan. The 75-kilometer Tabubil-Telefomin road was delivered at a cost of K267 million under the Government’s Connect PNG program in partnership with Ok Tedi through its Tax Credit Scheme serves as a critical link connecting Telefomin to Tabubil. Telefomin will be further linked to other parts of the country with more upcoming planned road developments in the area, including the Telefomin to Hela Road and Telefomin to Vanimo roads. Mr. Ilimbit said this road is expected to transform the lives of the locals, providing them with better access to cheaper goods and services that foster social and economic growth. “I used to walk days to attend school here at the Telefomin Secondary School years ago." Prime Minister James Marape has announced bold reforms to harness Information and Communications Technology (ICT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to drive efficiency, accountability, and fairness in Government decision-making as Papua New Guinea (PNG) begins its next fifty years of nationhood. Reflecting on his message at Independence Hill during the 50th Anniversary celebrations, Prime Minister Marape said his government is committed to eliminating nepotism, corruption, and favouritism from public institutions by embedding AI into the core of governance. “The Marape-Rosso Government, under Pangu’s leadership, is looking at Artificial Intelligence as a platform to build a merit-based society.” “A meritocracy means appointments, contracts, and government decisions are made on ability and qualification, not on tribe, family ties, or favouritism.” “This is the legacy I want to leave behind.” The Prime Minister revealed that the government is already engaging with international partners such as the Queensland University of Technology and Israeli experts to design an AI-powered ICT system. He outlined four key areas where AI will be introduced at the earliest. The first area is Public Service Appointments – Applications for senior public service roles will be managed through an AI platform, which will select the most qualified candidate based on merit. “I don’t care where you come from, what religion you practice, or what orientation you hold. If you have the best qualifications and experience for the job, you will get the job.” The second area is Public Procurement – Government tenders and contracts will be handled through an ICT system that removes personal preferences. AI will rank contractors objectively, ensuring transparency and fairness. “We want to eliminate human interference. A tender will go out, and the system will pick the best contractor based on qualifications and not on who you know.” Third is Government Policy Submissions – All submissions to Cabinet will be received through a single ICT portal monitored by AI. Only those aligned with the Constitution and national development priorities will progress. “Too often, good submissions are delayed because someone demands a favour, while bad submissions slip through.” “With AI, we will have a national filter to ensure only policies in the national interest reach Government.” The fourth and final area is Cyber and Crime Reporting Platform – A national ICT-based Police Station will allow citizens to lodge complaints, from corruption to domestic violence. AI will link cases to the justice system, ensuring accountability and visibility across all levels. “Whether it is corruption, theft, or violence, every complaint will be visible to the Police Minister, Commissioner, and government.” “No case will be hidden.” In addition, PM Marape said these reforms are part of his Government’s Jubilee commitment to Reset Governance for the future. “Technology is here to be used. In the next two years, we will mature these reforms so that by 2027, AI and ICT fuel efficiency, transparency, and accountability in our country.” “This will be our 50th Anniversary legacy.” He added that AI will help overcome the negative aspects of the “Wantok” system, which, while valuable for community life, has undermined governance when applied to public service. “The Wantok System has its good side, but in government, it breeds inefficiency and corruption.” “We must tidy this space so that our children inherit a system where merit and fairness prevail.” Furthermore, the Prime Minister concluded by assuring the nation that these innovations will anchor PNG’s journey to economic independence. “The 1975 generation gave us political independence. My generation must deliver economic independence.” “ICT and AI will be our tools to fight corruption, strengthen governance, and build a truly merit-based Papua New Guinea.”

Air Niugini has advised that flight PX205, operated by a Dash 8 aircraft (P2-ANP), from Rabaul to Port Moresby experienced a technical issue with the aircraft’s nose landing gear door this evening, Sunday 21st September, at approximately 6:23pm. In line with the airline’s Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), the pilots and crew safely managed the situation and carried out an emergency landing in Port Moresby. The aircraft landed safely and as a precaution, was later towed to the parking bay. Also, as part of precautionary measures, emergency services, including fire trucks and an ambulance, were on standby prior to landing and throughout this period. Air Niugini confirmed that all 46 passengers and three crew members on board are safe, with no injuries sustained. "We sincerely acknowledge the concern this incident may have caused to our passengers and their families and thank everyone for their patience and understanding." Air Niugini also stated that the safety of their passengers and crew remains their highest priority.

As part of its 50th Independence celebrations, Port Moresby General Hospital (PMGH) welcomed guests on a special walkthrough of the Comprehensive Cancer Centre; a facility set to transform cancer treatment in Papua New Guinea (PNG). Led by the hospital’s Senior Executive Management and the Cancer Unit, Acting Health Secretary Mr. Ken Wai and Deputy Secretary for Medical Services Dr. Dora Lenturut-Katal, toured the state-of-the-art bunkers that will soon house life-saving radiotherapy machines, marking a new era for patients who previously had limited treatment options. Chief Executive Officer of PMGH Dr. Paki Molumi, described the project as ‘the most technically sophisticated health infrastructure ever undertaken in PNG’. Launched in 2019 and fully funded by the government through the Public Investment Program, with support from Kumul Petroleum Holdings, the Centre is being built to international standards with guidance from global oncology experts. Dr. Molumi noted that while the project has faced funding challenges, it has made steady progress. “Phases I and II are complete, Phase III is 80% done, and Phase IV has already commenced.” Commissioning of Phase III is expected in early 2026, with services such as chemotherapy, brachytherapy, and radiotherapy to be introduced in stages. Once fully completed, the Cancer Centre will serve as a one-stop shop for cancer care, bringing together chemotherapy, radiotherapy, nuclear medicine, immunotherapy, bone marrow transplant services, and more under one roof. “This centre will eliminate the need for Papua New Guineans to travel overseas for treatment.” “It symbolizes our nation’s capacity to deliver world-class care at home, with pride and independence.” During the walkthrough, Mr. Ken Wai commended PMGH management for the progress of the centre and acknowledged their commitment to advancing specialized healthcare for the people of PNG. The walkthrough gave a glimpse into a future where hope, innovation, and accessibility will define cancer care for generations to come.

Port Moresby General Hospital (PMGH) proudly launched its first-ever clinical Road Show on September 19, coinciding with the global commemoration of World Patient Safety Day. The Road Show was a vibrant showcase where each clinical division demonstrated not only the care they provide today, but the visionary models of care they aspire to deliver over the next fifty years. Each of the divisions showcased their services through interactive and informative booths for the public. Acting Health Secretary Mr. Ken Wai and Deputy Secretary for Medical Services Dr. Dora Lenturut-Katal, joined PMGH’s Senior Executive Management on a tour of the displays, engaging with staff and learning more about the vital services provided at the hospital. Chief Executive Officer of PMGH Dr Paki Molumi stated that this is far more than an exhibition. It is a manifestation of the hospital’s future-focused mindset, a reflection of an organization that is evolving, innovating, and leading with purpose. “It is a catalyst for cultural transformation, where every staff member is inspired to come to work not just to perform tasks, but to make a difference.” “Each booth tells a story of dedication, expertise, and hope.” “From surgical innovations to paediatric care, from oncology to rehabilitation, our teams have poured their hearts into crafting displays that reflect both clinical excellence and compassionate service.” In addition, the Road Show created a platform not only to inform the public, but also to strengthen collaboration among divisions. Miss Bird of Paradise (MBoP) May T. Hasola, extended her heartfelt congratulations to the newly crowned inaugural Miss Bird of Paradise Gulf Province, Miss Uritai, Annsio Posa. She is currently in her second year of studies at the Pacific Adventist University (PAU) studying a Bachelor of Arts, double majoring in English and History. The beautiful and historic Rabaul Town in East New Britain province, lit up on the 16th of September 2025 in Papua New Guinea (PNG) colors and traditional attires from around the country to commemorate the country’s 50th Independence Anniversary as well as the 31st twin volcanic eruption. As part of the annual Frangipani festival, the program started at 4am with the ‘Kinavai’ ceremony; a sacred Tolai ritual with tubuans arriving by canoe at dawn. Then followed by the frangipani float parade around Rabaul town including cultural performances, local band performances and other fun family activities later held at the Queen Elizabeth Park. The frangipani float parade witnessed business houses and government institutions from Rabaul town and Kokopo took part in the famous and family fun-filled event. Rabaul Hotel Manager and member of the Frangipani Festival Committee Ms. Susie McGrade said that the main purpose of the frangipani float is to commemorate PNG’s independence anniversary as well as celebrating the twin volcanic eruptions. “Rabaul gave birth to independence, and we have all the reason to celebrate.” “The Mataungan Association pushed for our sovereignty, and we have to be grateful and honor the sacrifices and their fight for independence.” She further thanked the Rabaul District Administration, Governor’s Office and all the business houses who sponsored and took part in the float and making it a success. Ms. McGrade also thanked Pacific Industries (PI) for being the main sponsor of the event and given the naming rights for the Frangipani Gold Spot Float. Meantime, Rabaul District Administrator Freddy Lemeki, said that this year the District Administration supported the Rabaul Historical Society with K20, 000 to help with its independence programs and other related activities. “We also supported all our 49 wards as well as schools to assist them in their pre-independence celebrations which was celebrated a week earlier within their respective schools.” Lemeki commended the Frangipani Festival Committee, Rabaul district officers, police, Rabaul Business Community, and the public for a peaceful celebration and that the district looks forward to hosting another bigger and better event next year.

The Oceania Athletic Association has selected nineteen athletes for the Melanesian team that will compete at the Oceania Cup on October 30-31 in Nuku’alofa, Tonga including nine of the athletes to represent Papua New Guinea (PNG). The Oceania Cup is a team competition that will feature teams from Melanesia, Micronesia, and Polynesia, with all three teams fully funded by the Oceania AA. Teams from Australia, New Zealand, Tonga, Regional Australia, and Hawaii are also expected to participate. Each team can have up to ten male and ten female athletes. The events at the competition will include: Sprints and Mid-Distance: 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, and 3000m. Hurdles: 100m/110m hurdles and 400m hurdles. Jumps: Long jump, triple jump, and high jump. Throws: Javelin, shot put, discus, and hammer throw. The Melanesia, Micronesia, and Polynesia teams were chosen by the Oceania AA based on nominations from national federations and recent performances. Due to limited spots and the requirement that all Melanesian countries be represented, some top athletes were not selected. However, PNG athletes were chosen to fill spots in events where the region's depth is not as strong. The PNG athletes selected for the Melanesian team are: Male: Pais Wisil (100m, 200m), Daniel Baul (400m, 400m hurdles), Jiuteis Robinson (1500m, 3000m), Karo Iga (High Jump, shot put), Lucas Osida (discus, Javelin), and Lakona Gerega (Javelin). Female: Scholastica Herman (800m, 1500m), Nicklyne Kalua (1500m, 3000m), and Raylyne Kanam (400m hurdles). Meanwhile, Brett Green will manage the men's team for Melanesia, and Vaciseva Tavaga of Fiji will manage the women's team.

Deputy Prime Minister John Rosso has announced with deep sadness and shock the passing of Morobe Governor Luther Akisawa Wenge. Wenge passed away on Saturday, September 13, at the Port Moresby General Hospital after a period of illness. “His sudden passing is a tragic loss and shock for the people of Morobe province and for Papua New Guinea (PNG) on the eve of our country’s 50th Independence celebrations,” Rosso said in a statement. “Governor Wenge was more than a colleague; he was a strong leader, a seasoned lawyer, and a man of principle who dedicated his life to serving the people of Morobe.” Governor Wenge served as a three-term Governor from 1997 to 2012 and in his current tenure since 2022. Rosso highlighted that Wenge’s leadership was marked by an unwavering commitment to justice, development, and the well-being of his province. “His voice was always bold and uncompromising when it came to protecting the rights of our people.” “He was a true Morobean son who stood tall in the political and legal arenas, and his contribution to our province and nation will never be forgotten.” Rosso extended his heartfelt condolences to the Wenge family, their relatives, and the people of Samangzing village, Nawae, and Morobe Province. “As Morobeans, we mourn the loss of a great leader and a tireless advocate for our people. Chief Secretary to Government, Mr. Ivan Pomaleu, OBE, has expressed profound sorrow and deep sadness following the passing of the late Governor for Morobe province, Luther Asikawa Wenge who was called to rest on the 13th of September 2025 at the Port Moresby General Hospital. Mr. Pomaleu on behalf of the Department of the Prime Minister and the National Executive Council conveyed his condolence stating that the late Governor served for three terms in parliament as Governor of Morobe in 1997 to 2012 and later was re-elected as Governor in 2022. “In that role, he brought with him not only institutional knowledge but also humility, resilience and a quiet determination to serve this country as a member of parliament.” “Governor Wenge was not a man of many words, but his actions spoke volumes." "His colleagues and contemporaries alike have described him as a man of great zeal, courage and professional integrity.” “He carried out his duties with diligence and humility, often going beyond the call of duty as an MP to ensure that the government’s mandate to support provinces and districts was met and government services is delivered to his people of Morobe province.” In doing so, Mr. Pomaleu stated that the late governor contributed meaningfully to nation building in a sector that touches the daily lives of people in the public service space especially, as Chair to the Bipartisan Committee which the governor oversees the reform for Provincial Administrations in the country. “In him, we saw the true character of a member of parliament, one who did not seek recognition or praise but worked tirelessly for the betterment of others.” “His service stands as a reminder to all of us that leadership is not about position or title, but about character, dedication and the quiet pursuit of excellence.” “Today as we mourn his passing, we also celebrate his life and legacy.
