The United States of America (USA) Embassy in Port Moresby conducted a series of programs this week at the American Space located within the Matheson Library at the Papua New Guinea University of Technology (UNITECH) in Lae.
The initiatives included engagements with alumni of U.S. exchange programs, as well as information sessions for students, faculty, and the general public on study abroad and exchange opportunities.
During the visit, Sarah Sanderson, Public Affairs Officer for the U.S. Embassy, met with UNITECH Vice Chancellor Professor Ora Renagi to discuss ongoing partnerships between the United States and Papua New Guinea.
A key highlight was the recent accreditation of five UNITECH engineering programs by Engineers Australia under the internationally recognized Washington Accord.
This accreditation affirms that UNITECH graduates meet globally benchmarked standards, enabling them to compete and collaborate on an international level.
“This accreditation reflects years of dedicated work by UNITECH’s faculty, the government, and its partners,” Ms. Sanderson said.
“It is a testament to the university’s commitment to excellence in engineering education and its role in advancing Papua New Guinea’s development.”
“The United States Embassy applauds UNITECH for this remarkable accomplishment and looks forward to supporting its continued success.”
The American Space serves as a vital resource for the community, offering information about the United States, cultural programming, and professional workshops.
It also provides computer and internet access, as well as study areas for students within the Matheson Library.
The Washington Accord is an international agreement recognizing the equivalence of accredited engineering programs across member countries.
UNITECH’s inclusion under this accord highlights the university’s ability to produce graduates who meet rigorous global standards, enhancing their employability and contributions to the engineering profession worldwide.
The U.S Embassy remains dedicated to fostering educational partnerships with institutions such as UNITECH to support Papua New Guinea’s academic and professional development.
