Togoba Kofi Limited (TKL), a Papua New Guinean-owned coffee company, is making significant strides in the coffee industry with its foray into downstream processing.
The company recently launched its coffee products, Nambawan Shot and Nebilyer, at an event held on August 8th at the Stanley Hotel in Port Moresby.
This launch marks a significant milestone for TKL as it continues to grow since its inception in 2022.
Prime Minister James Marape, in a speech delivered by Coffee Minister William Bando, praised TKL for its efforts in adding value to Papua New Guinea’s coffee industry.
“As a government, we talk about downstream processing, and only a few are making it happen.”
“Tonight, I want to commend and congratulate TKL on behalf of our Prime Minister, the Deputy Prime Minister, and our government,” said Minister Bando.
TKL was founded by Fredrick Koldop, a local entrepreneur from Western Highlands Province, in August 2022.
The company has quickly established itself as a key player in the industry by focusing on processing Arabica beans into finished products.
Their 3-in-1 instant coffee, branded as Nambawan Shot, and ground coffee, branded as Nebilyer, are processed at their roasting plant in Mt Hagen.
These products are already being supplied to hotels, supermarkets, and coffee shops in Mt Hagen and Port Moresby, with plans for further expansion.
Minister Bando, representing the Prime Minister, highlighted the resilience and commitment of TKL in a challenging economic environment.
“Times are tough, and when you see Papua New Guineans being resilient and committed, and being able to employ 150 people, that is a testament to a success story.”
“Let me, from the bottom of my heart and on behalf of the Prime Minister, give you all the credit that you deserve and wish TKL the best going forward,” he stated.
TKL’s operations extend beyond coffee processing – the company is actively involved in the rehabilitation of coffee plantations and infrastructure development, particularly in road construction, to improve market access for local farmers.
TKL operates the Kilima coffee plantation in the Nebilyer Valley and partners with other coffee estates and smallholder farmers across several provinces.
The company also conducts training and education programs in coffee husbandry, distributes seeds to local farmers, and participates in plantation rehabilitation programs.
The launch event was attended by senior Papua New Guineans, including Minister for Commerce & Industry Win Bakri Daki and Minister for Energy Thomas Opa, who joined in celebrating TKL’s achievements.
The Nambawan Shot and Nebilyer coffee products will soon be available in all Togoba Kofi outlets, including Stanley coffee shops, restaurants, and local retail outlets.
Looking ahead, TKL is preparing for international expansion, and with its export license granted by the Coffee Industry Corporation in April, the company is set to open offices in Australia and Singapore, bringing Papua New Guinea’s coffee to overseas markets.
