Today marks the 4th Anniversary of the passing of Grand Chief Sir Michael Thomas Somare, a defining figure in Papua New Guinea’s journey to nationhood.
As the country remembers his legacy, we take this opportunity to honour his vision by advancing a new chapter in our national progress—a bid to establish a Professional Football team in the Oceania Professional League (OFC).
This initiative, led by the National Capital District (NCD), symbolizes the continuation of the Grand Chief’s unwavering belief in the potential of Papua New Guineans.
The bid was deliberately submitted on this significant date to pay tribute to the leader who foresaw a future where the nation would thrive independently.
Grand Chief Somare’s words at the dawn of independence still resonate today.
For when questioned about the country’s future without experienced professionals, Grand Chief had confidently stated, “My economists, engineers, doctors, accountants, and lawyers are still in their mothers’ wombs.”
“They will be born after independence, and they will run and manage the country.”
This same belief in the potential of our people now extends into sports, where Papua New Guinea is ready to compete on an international stage.
Governor of NCD Powes Parkop, emphasized that this bid is more than just about football because it is about carrying forward Somare’s vision of national excellence.
“We are not just celebrating his life; we are ensuring his dreams live on.”
“We believe in a future where Papua New Guinea excels not only in governance and development but also in sports.”
The Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) has set February 28, 2025, as the deadline for bids.
However, to honour Grand Chief Somare’s legacy, the Port Moresby City FC bid was officially submitted today.
If granted a license, the team aims to be a formidable force in regional football, bringing national pride and international recognition to the country.
