Yahangei Primary School in the Sindeni – Obura Wanenara District of Eastern Highlands Province has inaugurated new facilities to benefit its students and teachers.
The official opening of two double classrooms and twelve teachers’ houses was conducted by Eastern Highlands Governor Simon Sia, accompanied by Education Officer Dickson Simon. The event also marked the presentation of a fully equipped Lucas Mill Machine to the school administration to mill timber for constructing additional facilities.
This ongoing project, funded by the Eastern Highlands Provincial Government, aims to enhance educational standards in the province. It reflects Governor Sia’s vision for improving the education sector in alignment with the Provincial Education Board’s goals.
During the event, Governor Sia urged the community to support any projects initiated by the school administration.
“Improving literacy in the district, province, and country hinges on creating a conducive learning environment. This change in infrastructure will foster a positive mindset and attitude towards education, ultimately enhancing academic performance,” stated Governor Sia.
He further emphasized that investing in education is in harmony with the National Government’s Education Policy (NEP), which aims to enhance accessibility to education, enrich the learning experience, and equip students for future challenges.
On behalf of the school administration and the Board of Governance, Head Teacher Dickson Simon expressed gratitude for the leadership and vision of Governor Sia.
“Considering the challenges faced by our remote school, with no proper road access to basic government services, Governor, you have demonstrated exemplary leadership by addressing the needs of a school that serves the rural community,” he remarked.
Mr. Simon highlighted that a significant portion of the population resides in remote areas, while only 20 percent live in urban centers.
He pointed out that when rural schools deteriorate due to inadequate facilities, parents often feel compelled to move their children to urban areas to ensure they receive an education.
“For the Governor to allocate sufficient funds for our projects is commendable, and we must recognize and applaud his leadership,” he added.
The event was attended by hundreds of community members, students, and teachers, who celebrated the school’s new facilities with joy and laughter.
