Construction of the new terminal building for Momote Airport is well underway and taking shape.
This architectural master piece is designed by Sub Contractor, Allen Guo Investment Limited (AGI) working closely with lead Project Contractor China Harbour Engineering Corporation and the NAC Projects Team.
This project is expected to be completed before November this year (2021).
This new state of the art facility will include; a VIP Lounge; a spacious Departure Lounge that will cater for 139 seats; Passenger Check-In Counters; an Arrival Lounge with conveyor belt for baggages; baggage screening machines; Close Circuit Camera TV (CCTVs); a Kiosk; toilet facilities and others. It will also include on arrival VISA and Immigration counters to process international travelers should there be direct flights from overseas in the near future.
The terminal design resembles a Stingray, a cartilaginous fish common in the Manus Province. The design of the new building is unique in a sense that it represents a symbol of development aspirations of Manusians (or the people of Manus) at a rather faster pace, in other words simply meaning ‘moving forward’.
The structure of this new terminal building was planned with an idea to move away from the traditional ‘box type’ buildings seen at other airports in the country.
The improved facility for Momote Airport, coincides with the Manus Province’s plans to boost business activities and increase tourism opportunities.
This unique design and masterpiece, will mesmerize arriving tourists and the traveling public.
The new terminal building facility complements the airport’s upgraded aircraft runway pavement which was strengthened and protected with an asphalt surfacing finish as well as the runway length extended from previously 1,810 metres to achieve a total runway length of 2,010 metres to accommodate B737 – 800 or similar capacity aircraft and completed in April 2021.
Other works for the Momote Airport’s upgrade projects include the construction of the new airport market facility which is nearing completion; installation of water supply and airfield lighting system.
The building is constructed by AGI Limited, a subcontractor engaged by the China Harbour Engineering Corporation. The Momote Airport Upgrade is part of a series of high impact projects under Tranche 3 that are funded through the Asian Development Bank’s Multi-tranche Financing Facility (MFF) loan and the GoPNG’s counterpart funding worth a total of K99.6m.
It is managed by the National Airports Corporation’s Project Implementation Unit and implemented under the Civil Aviation Development Investment Program (CADIP).
The National Airports Corporation thanks the effort of the development partners for their continued support in ensuring that major airports in the country are improved to meet the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) standards and the national Civil Aviation Rules Part 139 to operate in safe and secure aerodrome environments.
