Heavy Consumption of homebrew and marijuana by many youths today is seen as a major factor in the increase of law and order problems in communities around the country.
President of Iabu Local Level Government in Bogia District, Kenny Boli, raised concern s on the increase of lawlessness caused by increasing number of youths consuming homebrew and smoking marijuana in the Potsdam Care Centre.
Potsdam is one of the three care centres for the displaced Manam islanders who were evacuated from the island and were relocated to the mainland as a result of the volcanic eruption.
President Boli revealed that a man was murdered at Potsdam recently during a drinking brawl that turned nasty ending in a stabbing incident causing death.
“During my eighteen years as the President of Iabu LLG I see that law & order issues have dramatically increased as many of the youths tend to heavily consume ‘paia wara’ (homebrew) and ‘spak brus’ (marijuana),”Boli said.
He stressed that many of the killings in the area are linked to homebrew and marijuana consumed by youths in the care centres.
“I am appealing to the National Government to address this issue by implementing tougher penalties on those who consume homebrew and marijuana before it is too late,” he said.
Boli adds that this is a major problem in all communities around the country and if these issues are not being addressed by the government sooner or later, the communities and this country will be run by these people.
