This just in, Two new COVID-19 death has been reported in the last 24 hours increasing the total number of COVID-19 related deaths to 71. Both deaths are males, ages 50 and 70, from the Jiwaka province. Also in the last 24 hours a total of 170 new cases were reported from 13 provinces with Manus Province reporting its first 8 cases bringing the national total to 8,984. All 22 PNG provinces have reported cases of COVID-19. Continue to practice COVID-19 safety protocols.

The Pacific Islands Forum is calling on Japan to re-think plans to dump toxic waste in the ocean. The Japanese government has announced plans to release treated water from the destroyed Fukushima nuclear power plant into the Pacific. The Forum’s Secretary General, Dame Meg Taylor, said under the provisions of the treaty of Rarotonga, the region’s leaders are determined to keep the Blue Pacific free of radioactive waste. The Commissioner of Police and Controller of the PNG COVID-19 National Pandemic Response Mr David Manning today issued directions for air service providers permitting two groups of people to travel. This includes students returning to their usual place of residence or returning to their education institution and persons returning to their usual places of residence. SP PNG Hunters have been hit with the news that in-form winger Brendon Gutuno will be sidelined for eight weeks with a double arm fracture as they prepare for Saturday’s clash with Sunshine Coast Falcons. With over 1,500 essential workers already vaccinated in Port Moresby, Health Minister Jelta Wong is optimistic that the numbers will continue to increase as the demand around the country grows. This morning the first batch of 132,000 vaccines arrived in Port Moresby through the COVAX facility in preparation for the Governments National Vaccine Roll-Out. This vaccine will be distributed to all provinces for the vaccination of health care workers and other front line essential workers.
