Australia has suffered its first death from Covid-19 for months as NSW sinks deeper into crisis. NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian confirmed a woman aged in her 90s had died after contracting the virus “within the home setting”, urging residents to adhere to restrictions to avoid endangering their loved ones. “Tragically, we’ve seen one older person die and I want to extend my deepest condolences to their families and loved ones,” she said. “I can’t stress enough that every time we risk breaking the rules, or even just going about our business and not getting tested when we need to, the…

Firefighters struggled to contain an exploding Northern California wildfire under blazing temperatures as another heat wave hits the U.S. West this weekend, prompting an excessive heat warning for inland and desert areas. On Friday, Death Valley National Park in California recorded a staggering high of 130 degrees Fahrenheit. If verified, the 130-degree reading would be the hottest high recorded there since July 1913, when the same Furnace Creek desert area hit 134 degrees, considered the highest reliably measured temperature on Earth. The Beckwourth Complex — a merging of two lightning-caused fires — headed into Saturday showing no sign of slowing…
NSW are unfazed by the challenge of having to win three State of Origins in Queensland to complete an historic series clean sweep, with Blues coach Brad Fittler declaring: “We will play anywhere, anytime”. Gold Coast will host Origin III after the ARLC was advised by the NSW Government on Saturday that it would not allow a major event with a crowd to be held in Newcastle next Wednesday. The Blues have had to travel to Townsville and Brisbane for the opening two matches of the series and were looking forward to receiving the State of Origin Shield on NSW…
Sydney Roosters coach Trent Robinson declared Sam Walker’s decision to run 90 metres towards his own tryline to wind the clock was an example of the teenage halfback’s game management. With the Roosters leading 22-16 and 20 seconds remaining in Saturday night’s match at Bankwest Stadium, Walker stunned Bulldogs players and team-mates by running backwards until the full-time siren sounded. It was a tactic made famous by former Kiwi star Tony Iro while playing for Adelaide Rams against St George in 1998 – before Walker was born – and Robinson praised the 19-year-old, who earlier laid on two tries and…
SP PNG Hunters showcased their on-field enthusiasm and intensity before being run down by Sunshine Coast Falcons in a 26-12 Intrust Super Cup loss at Sunshine Coast Stadium today. The Hunters’ first half was among its best in this challenging season of COVID restrictions as forward Benji Kot scored two tries to propel the visitors to a 10-0 lead at the break. This was the energy that coach Matt Church had been seeking from a team that has battled injury, illness and the difficulties of living away from Papua New Guinea throughout the year to ensure the Hunters can take…

Police in Haiti have killed or arrested the gunmen suspected of murdering President Jovenel Moïse, but say they are still hunting the masterminds. At least four gunmen have been killed and six more detained including, reportedly, a US citizen. People were urged to stay calm after they burned cars and seized two “foreigners” who they handed to police. The interim PM has told the BBC that Mr Moïse may have been killed because he was fighting “oligarchs” in Haiti. The president was shot dead at his home in the early hours of Wednesday. His wife, Martine, was seriously injured and…
