NEW BULLDOZER BOOSTS ROAD MAINTENANCE IN WAU WARIA DISTRICT NEW BULLDOZER BOOSTS ROAD MAINTENANCE IN WAU WARIA DISTRICT
A new bulldozer has arrived at Satomok camp, strengthening ongoing road construction and maintenance work across Wau Waria district in Morobe province. The machine is the latest addition to the fleet operated by the Wau Waria District Development Authority, which says the equipment will help keep rural roads open and improve access for remote communities. Over the past four years, more than 147 kilometres of road have been constructed in the district. Officials say the focus is now shifting toward maintenance, as completed roads need regular grading to remain usable, especially during heavy rain. The new bulldozer will be deployed for rehabilitation works on the Watabung and Wara Kawar sections, before moving into patrol grading towards the River Biaru corridor. Member for Wau Waria Marsh Narewec, said the arrival of the machine at Satomok camp marks an important step in keeping works moving on the ground. “The new machine just arrived here in camp Satomok,” he said. “It will help us continue the rehabilitation and maintenance works so the road remains open for our people.” He said maintaining the road is just as important as building it, because rural communities depend on it daily for health care, schooling, markets and transport. However, parts of the road network remain under pressure from weather and river damage. Sections between Wisini and Taurins village along the River Biaru have recently been washed away, cutting access for nearby communities. Engineers have previously warned that the area is unstable and recommended a bypass route further from the riverbank to reduce repeated damage. Despite the setbacks, road crews continue rehabilitation and grading works across the district, aiming to restore reliable access for rural families who rely heavily on the road for everyday survival and services.

THIRD SUSPECT ARRESTED AND REMANDED OVER MAPRIK POLICE BARRACKS ARSON THIRD SUSPECT ARRESTED AND REMANDED OVER MAPRIK POLICE BARRACKS ARSON
Police have arrested a third suspect in connection with the burning of the Maprik Police Barracks, raising the total number of people in custody to three. The latest arrest involves a man police allege played a key role in organizing the incident. He has now joined two others who were already detained. All three suspects appeared before the Maprik District Court earlier this week. A warrant was issued for their transfer and remand to the Boram Correctional Institution while investigations continue. East Sepik Provincial Police Commander Superintendent Christopher Tamari confirmed the arrest and said police inquiries are still ongoing. He explained that the incident is linked to unrest that erupted in Maprik following the death of a detainee who had previously escaped from police custody. The situation escalated into violence, resulting in the burning of a police housing block at the New Town Police Barracks. Officers and their families were forced to evacuate for safety as a duplex containing five housing units was completely destroyed in the blaze. According to police, tensions intensified after rumours circulated among relatives of the deceased that he had died while in custody. The unrest quickly spread as nearby groups moved into the New Town area, though Supt Tamari noted that police eventually restored order with the assistance of reinforcements. Supt Tamari added that the arrest of the third suspect is part of a continuing investigation, with further arrests still possible. Police say all suspects remain in custody as they build their case over the arson attack.

BANKING SERVICES BRINGS NEW OPPORTUNITIES TO WAU-WARIA BANKING SERVICES BRINGS NEW OPPORTUNITIES TO WAU-WARIA
A beneficial change is happening across Wau Waria District in Morobe province as more people begin opening bank accounts, saving money and building small businesses through the support of Women’s Micro Bank. From mothers selling vegetables at local markets, to farmers and small business owners, many families are now gaining access to banking services for the first time. At the centre of this initiative is Reichzonia Lari, who serves as the Project Officer for the bank and Cooperative and SME Coordinator for the district. Lari shared that the responses from communities has been encouraging. “People are really interested in learning how to save and manage their money,” she said. “More mothers and small business owners are now coming forward to open accounts and apply for loans.” The bank provides savings accounts, deposits, withdrawals and several loan programs designed to help people in the informal sector grow their income. One of the biggest highlights is the District Development Authority (DDA)-supported SME loan project, which is already helping women in the district start or expand small businesses. “We are currently supporting our first 100 mothers with K1, 000 each as startup capital.” “This is helping many families create opportunities for themselves.” Across the district, women are using the support to grow market sales, run small trade stores and support their children’s school needs. The bank is also running financial literacy training to teach people simple budgeting, saving and record keeping skills. “Many people are learning these things for the first time and they are excited. They want to improve their lives and become financially independent.” Despite challenges such as network issues and difficult road access into some rural areas, the bank continues reaching communities through support from councilors, pastors and local leaders. In places like Garaina, Waria and Tekadu, trusted community representatives are helping connect villagers with banking services. In addition, she stated that the district is full of hardworking people who simply needed access and guidance. “There are many smart and hardworking people here. Once they are given support and opportunity, they can do so much.” The growing interest in savings and small business development is now giving many families fresh hope for the future. For Wau-Waria, the expansion of banking services is not just about money; it is about empowering communities, supporting mothers and helping local people build a better future for themselves and their children.

RAI COAST COMMUNITY CENTER TO TRANSFORM ACCESS TO SERVICES RAI COAST COMMUNITY CENTER TO TRANSFORM ACCESS TO SERVICES
Rai Coast residents will soon benefit from a K2.7 million District Community Development Centre (DCDC), a project expected to transform how government services reach the community. The two-storey building, now under construction, is funded by K1 million from the Rai Coast District Development Authority (RDDA), K500,000 from the Department of Community Development, and K1.2 million from government and development partners. Once complete, the centre will house more than 50 workstations, ground-floor offices, and conference facilities for government departments, community development officers, and partner organizations. A transit lodge will also offer safe accommodation for survivors of gender-based and sorcery-related violence, secured with fencing, water tanks, and a standby generator. Department Secretary Jerry Ubase said the centre will do more than provide office space. “It brings services closer to the people and provides a safe space for vulnerable groups,” he said. Minister for Youth, Religion, and Community Development, Jason Peter, said the project is part of the government’s broader plan to strengthen rural services. Rai Coast MP Kessy Sawang said the district has long lacked a central office, making service delivery difficult. “This building bridges that gap and provides support for women, youth, churches, the elderly, and persons with disabilities,” she said. The K2.7 million DCDC, expected to be finished by mid-next year, marks a major step in improving governance, community resilience, and access to essential services in Rai Coast.
