Since the program's inception in 2023, more than K250,000 has been allocated to sporting associations across East New Britain, with an additional K250,000 provided annually to support the Agmark Gurias Rugby League team. NATIONAL REPENTANCE DAY: A CALL FOR CHANGE & TRUE REPENTANCE NATIONAL REPENTANCE DAY: A CALL FOR CHANGE & TRUE REPENTANCE
As the nation marks another National Repentance Day, Rev. Dr. Jack Urame, Head Bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Papua New Guinea (ELCPNG), has issued a powerful call for genuine change in the way the country lives, highlighting the disconnect between the Christian values upon which the nation was built and the moral challenges it faces today. In a recent Facebook post from the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Papua New Guinea, Rev. Dr. Urame, urged people to reflect not just on their personal lives but on people across the country. “The reality we see in our country makes me wonder if we truly have repented or changed our moral behaviour and truly live as Christians.” He emphasized that the country is experiencing moral decline at an alarming rate, with the negative outcomes of the nation’s moral behaviour becoming increasingly undeniable. “Violence in various forms is on the rise, tearing apart communities and families.” “Social instability, fueled by the abuse of drugs and alcohol, is further worsening these challenges.” “The theft of national resources and widespread corruption within high offices are draining the nation's wealth and undermining its progress.” “Dishonesty and greed are eroding the core values of respect, love, care, and justice, while the disruptive behavior of young people is undermining peace and harmony in many areas.” “Additionally, ethnic and tribal conflicts continue to spread, both in rural regions and urban centers, contributing to a growing sense of division.” “These issues, along with many others, are causing great suffering across the country.” According to Rev. Dr. Urame, true change must begin within ourselves. “When genuine repentance happens within us, change will also happen in our communities and country.” He called for a national reset, encouraging leaders to initiate a culture change in the areas of governance, resource management, and personal responsibility. "We must change the culture of greed and corruption, develop honesty, and be of service to others," he said. "We must change from the culture of stealing public money and focus on using resources for the development of our country." He also stressed the importance of fostering a culture of respect, honesty, and hard work. "We must change the culture of bribery, cheating, and dishonest business practices and live a noble life." He concluded saying that repentance is not a one-time act but a way of life.

PM CALLS FOR RESPECT & RESET DURING REPENTANCE DAY PM CALLS FOR RESPECT & RESET DURING REPENTANCE DAY
Prime Minister (PM) James Marape on Repentance Day today (August 26th, 2025), called for respect towards laws emphasizing that this act was the best contribution each Papua New Guinean can make for the country. He delivered his address at Sir John Guise Stadium, Port Moresby during the Repentance Day service which began at 5am this morning. He emphasized that the ten commandments basically call for respect towards God as well as towards our fellow men. “Respecting law is the best contribution each of us can give to the country.” “Number one law to respect is our 10 commandments that basically talks about respecting God and respecting fellow humankind.” “Number two law is our nation's constitution and all the enabling legislations that run with it.” He stated that both these laws teach respect in three aspects: Respect for God, respect for one another and respect for the laws that govern us. Additionally, Marape implied that disrespecting the law causes issues for the country and go against God. He urged people to repent and come back to God. “Many people still remain poor and in poverty in what is a land of abundance. We have come the last 49 years speaking in the face of 50th – corruption still remains abound.” “Violence still remains abound. Disrespect for law and order still remains abound. Do we continue like this or we must stop at one point in time?” “Today, right in the face of our 50th, I ask all of us to pause and take a look inward and then we look outward and let us come back to God.” "How do we reset? The clock we’re resetting is not just a matter of time—it’s a reset of individual character, and the sum of these resets leads to the transformation of our national character.” Every child, whether you are listening from the farthest reaches of our 21 provinces or from the Autonomous Region of Bougainville, from east to west, north to south, no matter where you are—big or small—the reset starts with you. It begins in your mind, in your heart.” “Together, the sum of our individual resets will bring about the national reset we seek.”

PMJM CALLS FOR NATIONAL UNITY & MORAL RENEWAL AT JUBILEE RESET GOSPEL CONCERT PMJM CALLS FOR NATIONAL UNITY & MORAL RENEWAL AT JUBILEE RESET GOSPEL CONCERT
Prime Minister (PM) James Marape addressed a vibrant crowd last night at the Jubilee Reset Gospel Concert, delivering a powerful and emotionally charged speech calling for moral revival, national unity, and a return to Christian values as the country approaches its 50th year of independence. Speaking to a packed venue of young people and families, PM Marape celebrated the country’s cultural diversity while urging unity under one flag, one Constitution, and one faith in God. “Since 1975, one people, one nation, one country has been born by God’s grace.” PM Marape’s speech echoed the Christian foundations laid by Papua New Guinea’s founding father, the late Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare. Recalling a pivotal moment in 2008, Marape described how he stood beside Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare during the launch of the first-ever National Repentance Day. “If Sir Michael, in the final chapter of his public life, said that God, worship, and repentance are important, then we must listen.” “His generation gave us our Constitution. Today, we must carry forward the spiritual vision he left for us.” The Prime Minister also urged young men to take up their role as protectors of their communities, families, and especially the nation’s women and girls. In addition, noting that the national anthem mentions ‘sons,’ he issued a call for moral responsibility and gender respect. “It is the sons who must rise to protect their sisters, mothers, and the future of our nation.” “The girls in your neighbourhood, your street, your village, they are your sisters. You are your sister’s keeper.” Meanwhile, whilst condemning social ills such as alcohol abuse, drug use, gambling, and nightlife, PM Marape stressed the importance of faith-based living and community responsibility. He encouraged young people to prioritize worship and clean living, regardless of denominational affiliation. “My country needs young men and women who will stand firm in their communities. You are the type of people this country needs.” Citing Matthew 10:26–31, the Prime Minister reassured youth that their lives matter to God, likening their value to the sparrows known and watched over by the Creator. He concluded the evening by leading the crowd in singing the worship song Awesome God, a personal favorite he recalled singing as a teenager. Despite criticism he may face, he affirmed, “I sing for Jesus.” Furthermore, PM Marape’s address comes as the nation prepares to commemorate fifty years of independence in 2025. His message, blending patriotic pride with spiritual conviction, resounded deeply with the audience, drawing applause and renewed energy from Christian youth across denominations. “Together, we will walk into our 50th year and beyond. God will prosper PNG as we go.”

MORE THAN 500 PMGH NURSES CERTIFIED IN BSL MORE THAN 500 PMGH NURSES CERTIFIED IN BSL
Over 500 nurses at Port Moresby General Hospital (PMGH) have recently completed life-saving Basic Life Support (BLS) training, marking a significant advancement in the hospital’s commitment to improving patient care. The training, is aimed at reducing preventable hospital deaths and ensuring a quicker, more efficient response in emergency situations. Speaking during the certificate presentation ceremony, PMGH CEO Dr. Paki Molumi emphasized the importance of BLS certification as a global healthcare standard, calling for it to be mandatory for all healthcare workers. “Our goal is for every staff member—from nurses to community health workers—at PMGH to be certified in BLS, with yearly refresher courses to maintain competency.” This initiative aligns with the 2024 Medical Symposium’s Resolution Six, which urges Provincial Health Authorities across Papua New Guinea to adopt BLS training. Unlike general first aid, PMGH’s tailored BLS program prepares healthcare professionals to deliver more accurate, effective resuscitation, addressing specific gaps in patient safety and care. Nurses who perform above 80% in assessments will have the opportunity to pursue further training in Advanced Life Support (ALS). The success of the program is attributed to collaboration between the Nursing Division, the Anaesthetic Society of PNG, and the Emergency Medicine Society, who provided technical expertise and accreditation for the training. Dr. Molumi commended the nurses for their dedication, particularly those who completed the training over weekends, reinforcing the value of the initiative in enhancing overall patient outcomes.
