Prime Minister (PM) James Marape has commended the graduating class of Sonoma Adventist College in East New Britain Province for their hard work and urged them to embrace Christian values as a foundation for a successful and fulfilling life.
Speaking passionately at the graduation ceremony, PM Marape reinforced the importance of self-reliance and resilience in the face of life’s challenges.
“Life is not a full stop; it is a comma,” he said.
“Victory over oneself is the first step toward overcoming the challenges that will come your way. These values, grounded in faith and self-discipline, are the key to a bright future.”
The Prime Minister highlighted the Government’s ongoing commitment to education reform, which aims to reduce the financial burden on students and their families while promoting self-sustaining livelihoods through business and career opportunities.
PM Marape also praised Sonoma Adventist College’s holistic approach to education, combining academic excellence with strong Christian principles. He expressed his support for the institution’s recent milestone of affiliation with Pacific Adventist University and encouraged its leadership to work towards university status.
“I believe in the power of faith-based education to shape not only individuals but also entire communities. Institutions like Sonoma Adventist College are instrumental in developing leaders who uphold integrity, hard work, and service to others,” PM Marape said.
To further enhance the impact of the college, the Prime Minister recommended the introduction of compulsory courses in business and commerce.
“By equipping students with practical skills and entrepreneurial knowledge, alongside their spiritual foundation, we can prepare them to lead successful and meaningful lives,” he said.
He also called on relevant government authorities to support Sonoma Adventist College with infrastructure and curriculum development to facilitate this growth.
Located in a serene environment 20 kilometers from Kokopo, Sonoma Adventist College provides an ideal setting for academic and spiritual growth. Its programs in Theology, Primary Education, Business Studies, Agriculture, and Building prepare students for a wide range of careers, all rooted in Christian principles.
PM Marape particularly emphasized the importance of theology studies in promoting positive living and harmonious communities.
“Faith-based education is essential for building a society that values compassion, service, and responsibility,” he said.
The Prime Minister was joined at the event by several government and industry leaders, including Minister for Higher Education Kinoka Feo, Vice-Minister for Justice Francis Alua, Secretary for National Planning Koney Samuel, and Kumul Petroleum Holdings Ltd Managing Director Wapu Sonk.
With such support, PM Marape reaffirmed his belief that Sonoma Adventist College will continue to inspire and equip future generations to contribute meaningfully to Papua New Guinea’s growth and prosperity.
