The Yalu Bridge in the Wampar Rural LLG of Huon District, Morobe Province, was cut off following heavy flooding caused by a torrential downpour.
The bridge, which lies along the Highlands Highway, is a crucial link for residents, villages, and the traveling public from the Highlands and Madang provinces.
Willie Sebas, a local from Munum village who was at the scene, reported that the flooding washed away a section of the bridge, severing it from the road and leaving it impassable.
As a result, vehicles and passengers attempting to access the bridge are stranded on both sides.
This incident has significantly disrupted travel along the Highlands Highway, a vital route for many.
In 2008, similar continuous rain led to extensive flooding that nearly caused the Yalu Bridge to collapse.
Farms, gardens, and homes in Yalu were also washed away in that disaster.
Efforts are expected to be made to address the situation and restore connectivity as soon as possible.
