West New Britain Provincial Police Commander, Chief Inspector Januarius Vosivai has warned the public in the province to not believe everything that is posted on social media.
This follows an unverified Facebook post late on Tuesday night claiming that the main water supply for Kimbe town had been tampered with, causing unnecessary panic.
The claim posted on the social platform stated that the main water supply for the town had been contaminated with the addition of popular herbicide, Gramoxone.
PPC Vosivai stated that the individual who runs the Facebook page, Kimbe Town Crime Report, which first shared the misleading claim has been questioned and warned by police in relation to the incident.
The police boss further added that the public should not believe everything they read from social media but approach relevant authorities to verify such claims in future.
