Waniati Maternal Waiting Home (WMWH) in Eastern Highlands Province celebrated their 5th year anniversary of Maternal Mortality operations in Papua New Guinea (PNG).
WMWH welcomed their 1,000th mother this week while Celebrating, surrounded by significant partners that have supported them over the years.
Meanwhile, the presence of Australian High Commission demonstrated Australia’s commitment to working in partnership with PNG to reduce maternal mortality including through targeted support for maternity care, midwifery training and health infrastructure.
This is part of Australia’s broader commitment to improving maternal and child health in the Indo-Pacific region.
WMWH provides essential antenatal and postnatal services to mothers across Eastern Highlands Province as a non-governmental organization.
Their services provide women with support and access to safe birthing, and education programs that provide mothers with vital information to ensure their safety and that of their newborns.
Australia has supported WMWH in a variety of ways, including;
• the placement of Australian Volunteers, three of whom are currently at the Home.
• the Australia Awards Program, and,
• the Australian Government’s Direct Aid Program.
Waniati Maternal Waiting Home is an example of a locally-led initiative that is making a big difference to the community, and contributing to PNG’s National Health Plan 2021-2030, working in partnership with communities, government and partners like Australian Government.
