The University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG) Acting Registrar, Professor Lekshmi N. Pillai, delivered a heartfelt tribute at the UPNG’s fourth commemoration Ceremony of Late Grand Chief Sir Michael Thomas Somare at UPNG Forum Square in the evening of the 26th February, 2025.
His speech reflected on Sir Michael’s enduring legacy and his pivotal role in shaping Papua New Guinea’s (PNG) independence and national unity.
Professor Pillai expressed his personal reflections on the Grand Chief, acknowledging his brief yet meaningful encounters with Sir Michael during the latter’s frequent visits to UPNG.
He emphasized the unique qualities that earned him the title “Father of the Nation.” He posed the question: Why is he called the Father of the Nation?”
The answer, he stated, lies in his unwavering dedication to Papua New Guinea’s independence and unity.
“Sir Michael’s journey began in 1936, and as he matured, he recognized the need for independence from Australia.”
“In 1968, he embarked on a mission to gather like-minded individuals who shared his vision.”
“By 1973, he successfully convinced the Australian government to agree, in principle, to PNG’s independence.”
“However, the journey was far from over, as many Papua New Guineans were uncertain and unprepared for self-governance.”
“Despite resistance, Sir Michael took it upon himself to travel across the country, instilling confidence in his people and uniting them under a common purpose,” said Prof. Pillai.
Professor Pillai highlighted the Grand Chief’s foresight in prioritizing cultural unity. Recognizing Papua New Guinea’s vast diversity of over 850 languages and numerous tribes.
He elaborated that Sir Michael sought to strengthen national identity through cultural preservation.
This vision led to the our Independence in 1975, till today reaching our 50th Independence Anniversary.
Professor Pillai further expressed his appreciation for the organizers of the event, commending their efforts as a successful 4th commemoration for UPNG.
