The UPNG School of Business and Public Policy (SBPP) representative Mr. Samson Psalmist Maim acknowledged the legacy of Sir Michael and the immense potential of today’s generation in shaping the nation’s future.
Mr. Maim addressed this at the University of Papua New Guinea’s 4th Commemoration of the Late Grand Chief Sir Michael Thomas Somare on the 26th February 2025.
Drawing inspiration from biblical references, Mr. Maim likened the transition of leadership from Sir Michael’s generation to the present as the shift from a “Moses leadership” to a “Joshua generation.”
Mr. Maim stressed that while the pioneers of PNG’s independence (Moses leadership) had fought tirelessly to free the nation from colonial rule, the responsibility now rests upon the younger generation to continue this journey and reclaim the nation from corruption, greed, and socio-economic struggles.
Mr. Maim quoted biblical passages that encouraged courage, confidence, and faith, urging young Papua New Guineans to step into leadership with strength and determination.
He emphasized that leadership is not about personal gain but about serving the people and fulfilling a collective vision, encouraging youth to embrace wisdom, integrity, and resilience as they strive to build a better Papua New Guinea.
His speech reinforced the belief that today’s generation has the power to drive change and shape a prosperous future.
“The legacy of Sir Michael Somare remains a guiding force, inspiring young leaders to take responsibility and lead with vision, courage, and purpose.”
