The small yet impactful business, Tonoruku Trading from the Autonomous Region of Bougainville, made a significant impression at the NCD Women’s Expo and Summit held at the Sir John Guise stadium in Port Moresby.
Led by owner Martina Nasa, the business represents a determined group of women rooted in a unique philosophy that speaks on letting go of something you love while still holding onto it emotionally.
This sentiment is reflected in their incredible products, which are deeply connected to the local culture and community of Bougainville.
From humble beginnings into a promising journey in 2015. Marina’s journey began where she would market her products directly to the community. Over time, she built a store in Arawa town, expanding her reach and market presence.
“I registered it when I didn’t have any store. It was just a table,” Martina recalls.
This dedication and perseverance have been the backbone of her success.
A Unique Product Range Tonoruku Trading specializes in are traditional baskets including a wide range of essential craft jewelry such as bracelets, earrings, necklaces, bilums, buskets and essential organic oil.
Martina’s business model not only supports her livelihood but also empowers mothers in the village. She buys products from them, thereby creating a sustainable source of income for many women.
“I do help the mothers in the village. We create and sell, or we buy from them and sell,” Martina explains.
This approach not only preserves traditional crafts but also supports the local economy.
Martina’s efforts have not gone unnoticed, in 2022, she attended the SME Awards event at APEC House and won an award from UNDP as a Woman of Influence.
“I got an award from UNDP for Arob women of influence,” Martina proudly shared
This recognition has further bolstered her resolve to continue her work and inspire other women.
The 2024 NCD Women’s Expo and Summit has provided Martina with valuable networking opportunities. She has joined groups such as the CPL group of Companies that market their products at Waigani Central and other venues, fostering collaboration among women entrepreneurs.
“We support each other. I can buy their products, and they can buy my products. Work together, and we can do it,” Martina says.
Martina encourages potential SME beginners to leverage their environment and relationships to create sustainable products and networks. Her emphasis on community and collaboration is a testament to her belief in collective growth and support.
Tonoruku Trading’s participation in the NCD Women’s Expo and Summit is a step towards greater visibility and impact. Martina is committed to going back to her village and encouraging other women to engage in entrepreneurial activities.
“I have to help my women in the village, something they can make to sustain their living,” she asserts.
Her vision for the future is one where women are empowered to create and sustain businesses that not only provide for their families but also preserve and celebrate their cultural heritage.
Tonoruku Trading’s journey is a powerful example of how small businesses can make a big impact. Through Martina’s leadership and dedication, the business not only thrives but also empowers and inspires women in the community.
