Police in Central Province have confirmed the murder of a Goilala man last night at Vanapa along the Hiritano Highway, sparking tense retaliation attacks and significant disruptions to travellers.
Central Police units responded to the scene but struggled to control a group of enraged tribesmen from Goilala, whose frustration turned to the unfortunate commuters along the route.
Opportunists reportedly joined in, escalating attacks on passing vehicles and creating a hazardous environment.
Doa Police were advised to halt inbound traffic from Brown River and beyond, effectively blocking access to Port Moresby for public safety.
Central Police units returned at dawn to clear the area and ensure safe passage along the highway, although tensions remain high.
The incident is believed to be tied to an ongoing feud originating a week ago, in which three people were killed.
Yesterday’s killing appears to have triggered another wave of retribution, with the deceased’s family members and others targeting the traveling public along the highway’s volatile stretch.
Police have stationed officers to maintain order and monitor the area, but caution all travellers to remain vigilant when using the Hiritano Highway as tensions are expected to continue.
