Residents of Arawa, in the Autonomous Region of Bougainville, are poised to experience enhanced access to reliable electricity with the ongoing renewable energy upgrades set to end in 2025.
Leading the charge with assistance from Australia, the Autonomous Bougainville Government (ABG) has completed these renovations, which mark the beginning of Bougainville’s first commercial-scale solar farm with battery storage and the potential for revolutionary changes for the surrounding population.
ABG President Ishmael Toroama and Australian High Commissioner John Feakes conducted a thorough tour of the power plant renovations to commemorate the project’s halfway point.
High Commissioner Feakes spoke at the event and reaffirmed Australia’s steadfast commitment to supporting Bougainville’s goals for economic development and upgrading its energy infrastructure.
He remarked, “Australia is committed to improving access to energy in Bougainville and is supporting the ABG’s economic development and energy goals.”
The K18.8 million worth of renewable energy enhancements in Arawa are being carried out in two stages.
The first stage entails setting up a small solar power plant at PNG Power Limited’s (PPL) current power plant, which started providing Arawa with electricity in March of this year.
The construction of a larger solar farm with a state-of-the-art battery energy storage system will thereafter take place in the second phase. This additional site will be acquired by PPL in 2023 with aid from the ABG.
When completed, these improvements will help PPL save a great deal of money on operating expenses by reducing its reliance on pricey diesel fuel. At the same time, they will reduce carbon emissions by an estimated 1,800 tonnes of CO2e in the first year alone.
In addition to promoting environmental sustainability, this emission decrease will make it easier to provide Arawa’s residents with a more dependable and constant electricity source.
High Commissioner Feakes expressed excitement for the official project unveiling in March 2025, which is anticipated to be attended by the William Duma the Minister for State Enterprises, and representatives from the ABG.
This achievement represents a turning point in Arawa’s transition to sustainable energy supply and highlights the joint efforts of Australian and local partners in promoting progress.
Moreover, Arawa’s renewable energy renovations are a crucial part of Australia’s larger aid program, which fortifies provincial power plants all around Papua New Guinea.
Preparations are in motion to provide comparable assistance to Buka’s power plant, demonstrating Australia’s persistent dedication to promoting energy sustainability and resilience throughout the country.
Furthermore, PPL stands to profit greatly from ongoing operation and maintenance support as well as increased management assistance.
These measures will help to guarantee the effectiveness and longevity of the recently created electrification infrastructure.
