A fatal accident along the road between Lorengau and Momote in Manus Province recently this month has resulted in the death of a pregnant woman and her husband critically injured.
Manus Provincial Police Commander David Yapu said the pregnant woman was walking along the road with her husband heading back to their home while a vehicle swung off the road and hit them.
“The vehicle hit them and threw them to the bushes at the side of the road upon impact,” Mr Yapu said.
“The woman died upon arrival at Lorengau General Hospital while her husband was admitted with serious injuries.”
Chief Inspector Yapu said the driver of the vehicle was arrested and charged with two counts of dangerous driving causing death and grievous bodily harm.
The driver was identified as Napoleon Simatab, aged 36 from East Sepik and is employed by Hornibrooks NGI as a civil engineer.
