PORT MORESBY GENERAL HOSPITAL ACHIEVES MAJOR CANCER CARE MILESTONE WITH SUCCESSFUL CT SIMULATOR COMMISSIONING

Port Moresby General Hospital (PMGH) has officially completed the commissioning of its advanced Computed Tomography (CT) Simulator, marking a transformative leap forward for cancer treatment and radiation therapy in Papua New Guinea.

The intensive five-day commissioning process was executed in partnership with the Flowtint Group and drew on a high-level collaboration of international and local medical physicists from Australia, Sri Lanka, and Papua New Guinea.

To ensure the highest standards of patient safety and clinical accuracy, the joint technical team established baseline machine performance, completed rigorous quality assurance protocols, and verified that the CT Simulator met strict international tolerance thresholds for optimal diagnostic imaging.

A critical phase of the technical work involved mapping the exact relationship between CT Hounsfield Units (HU) and Relative Electron Density (RED) using various tissue-equivalent materials. These precise metrics have now been integrated into the hospital's Treatment Planning System (TPS), allowing oncology teams to calculate pinpoint radiation doses tailored to individual radiotherapy patients.

The technical commissioning data will now undergo a final round of verification before being submitted to the PMGH Clinical Governance committee for official sign-off and immediate release into clinical use.

This milestone drastically enhances PMGH’s internal capacity to deliver safe, highly accurate, and international-standard cancer treatment services directly to the people of Papua New Guinea.
