The rise in crime rate as a result of the deteriorating law and order situation in the country has prompted the Papua New Guinea Chamber of Resources and Energy (PNG CORE) to initiate a Security Summit to look at ways to address this matter.
The one-day event, which will take place in the city of Port Moresby on April 17th 2024, will bring together government, state security agencies, industry project operators, and security providers to discuss issues of importance for the sector, and country.
In announcing the Summit, PNG CORE Chief Operating Officer, Mrs. Pansy Taueni-Sialis said that this event signifies the Chamber’s efforts to address security challenges prevalent in project areas, and the country at large.
“As a peak body representing the mineral, petroleum and energy sectors, the security of our projects, and general law-and-order play a critical role in determining a project’s success,” she stated.
In recent months, the importance of security has been highlighted, especially through the unfortunate events of January 10th, 2024, as well as the deteriorating law and order across the country.
“PNG CORE is initiating this dialogue, to foster discussions on key aspects such as Risks, Concerns, and Information sharing,” said the Chief Operating Officer.
She said by addressing these topics, the summit aims to enhance everyones understanding of the current security landscape within project footprints and beyond.
“This also serves as a platform for stakeholders to engage in meaningful dialogue, share insights, and collaborate towards a deeper understanding of security dynamics at both local and broader levels.”
“This will also be an opportunity for government, through agencies including the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary to provide the industry with an insight on where we can partner together for the benefit of our communities.”
