A new song celebrating cultural heritage and unity, Pasin Tumbuna (translated as Traditional Ways), has been launched, marking a powerful collaboration between Bougainvillean artists and First Nations Australian musicians Jake and Tjupurru Fabila.
Inspired by the 2023 National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee (NAIDOC) Week theme, For Our Elders, the song honours the wisdom of elders and the importance of preserving traditions to shape identity.
During the launch, Autonomous Bougainville Government President, Ishmael Toroama, emphasized the significance of safeguarding Bougainville’s culture and traditions.
“Preserving our heritage is crucial in reflecting the unique identity of our people,” said President Toroama.
The creation of Pasin Tumbuna was supported through a partnership involving the Autonomous Bougainville Government and the Australian and New Zealand Governments.
The song also brought together a variety of talents, including finalists from the 2023 Bougainville Voice X-Plosion, PNG artist Richard Mogu, and sound engineer Melchior Wagum of Backstage Studios. The track features the voices of esteemed local elders Chief Mark Waraka and the late Chief Philip Buritoa.
One of the contributors, Emma Getsi, a contestant in the 2023 Voice X-Plosion, described the project as a cultural bridge.
“It’s about honouring our ancestors, celebrating our identity, and fostering unity between our communities,” she said.
The song’s production provided young Bougainvillean artists with the opportunity to learn traditional chants from their elders and work alongside renowned First Nations Australian musicians. The collaboration was further enriched through the involvement of Wantok Musik Australia.
Tjupurru Fabila, a First Nations artist involved in the project, expressed his pride in mentoring the young talents.
“I love working with these young musicians and seeing them transform through mentoring and shine on stage. The world is ready for a Bougainville explosion,” he said.
The launch event underscored the strength of cultural exchange and people-to-people connections, with the Australian Government highlighted its ongoing efforts to strengthen ties between Australia’s First Nations peoples and the communities of Bougainville, PNG, and the Pacific.
In addition to the song, a documentary featuring the 2023 Voice X-Plosion contestants and their elders was produced. The documentary explores the significance of music in preserving culture, inspiring pride, and uniting communities.
The Bougainville Voice X-Plosion, hosted by the Bougainville Youth Federation with support from the Australian and New Zealand Governments, serves as a platform for Bougainvillean youths to showcase their creativity and talent.
As Pasin Tumbuna resonates with audiences, it stands as a testament to the enduring power of music in bridging cultures and celebrating shared heritage.
