Nine men have been arrested in connection with the brutal rape and murder of Ms. Margaret Gabriel, which took place on the 15th of February 2025.
Police Commissioner David Manning confirmed the arrests, stating that the individuals were taken into custody on the 27th of February.
Forensic procedures, including fingerprinting and DNA testing, have been conducted to establish their involvement.
This brings the total number of arrests to twelve, following the earlier capture of three suspects.
The investigation has received critical support from the Australian Federal Police forensic team, who traveled from Canberra to assist the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary (RPNGC).
Their expertise has helped police collect and analyze crucial forensic evidence.
“With the support of our policing partners, RPNGC Forensics personnel continue to deploy modern forensic tools in our fight against crime. DNA evidence and fingerprints provide irrefutable proof to ensure convictions in a court of law,” said Commissioner Manning.
Authorities believe that DNA and fingerprint analysis will play a key role in ensuring justice for Ms. Gabriel and her family.
The Commissioner emphasized that the integration of modern forensic techniques is strengthening criminal investigations and making the justice system more effective.
“The use of modern DNA and fingerprint technologies is increasingly being implemented by RPNGC investigators, helping us to apprehend more criminals who commit such depraved acts against innocent people,” he added.
The RPNGC remains committed to utilizing the latest investigative methods to remove violent offenders from the streets and ensure public safety.
The police force continues to invest in advanced forensic tools to strengthen investigations and increase prosecution success rates.
Commissioner Manning also extended his condolences to Ms. Gabriel’s family and assured them that police are working tirelessly to bring all those responsible to justice.
