Australia provided a PGK76 million grant to develop the new Buin District Hospital serving over 50,000 people, celebrating Australia’s continued support to the people of Bougainville.
The event was a groundbreaking ceremony focused on enhancing the health sector in the autonomous region of Bougainville.
The new Hospital will be part of a wider network of health facilities in Bougainville, supported by Australia, including health posts in Orami, Kodora, Karato, Kakusida, and a new health centre at Soroken.
Buin District Hospital when complete, will be able to provide the following
services:
- Medical imaging and physiotherapy services.
- Dental and surgical services,
- Maternal and child health,
- Accident and emergency,
- General outpatient,
It will also include a Family Support Centre, a mortuary, and other facilities, in South Bougainville, as well as Solomon Islanders from the Shortland Islands who often travel to Buin for medical services.
Australia’s funding for each health facility not only ensures healthcare access but also creates job opportunities and stimulates local economies, providing broader economic benefits for the communities.
Australia is dedicated to supporting Papua New Guinea’s health sector, including funding for routine immunisation for children, strengthening HIV services, and providing strategic assistance to the Bougainville Department of Health.
