The Niugini Engineering Procurement and Services Ltd (NEPS) continue to improve the road and drainage channels along Dikagari Drive in Tokarara, Port Moresby.
Despite progressive stages today, the project currently faces persistent challenges including the unpredictable heavy rainfall hampering progress and existing service utilities, such as power, water, and sewer lines which often intersect the construction path.
NEPS has maintained open communication with residents, conducting on-site awareness sessions, prioritizing safety, including site barricading to ensure minimal community access and minimize hazards.
Reflective tapes and signage guide nighttime traffic through excavation zones, improving safety for both workers and commuters.
The rainfall has also caused erosion of fill materials and washout at active sites, slowing progress and increasing the need for rework.
Work has been driven into late hours to latest 9-10pm.
The night construction has continued at the Kumul Training Institute (junction) along the Dikagari Road of Tokarara, to reinforce damaged culverts, drainage and pavements for long term structure.
The scope of work includes extensive cut-and-fill operations, reinforced concrete pipe (RCP) installation, and upgrading existing culverts.
The area’s steep terrain and low-lying depressions required larger drainage systems to handle heavy runoff where the team used 750mm and 900mm pipes to address the chronic flooding concerns raised by the community.
The construction team are looking to completed over 1,000 meters of earthworks and drainage installation.
The tireless work efforts remain overseen by NEPS Project Engineer Mr. Lawrence Blehe.
Meanwhile, the Road maintenance has forced the public transport or Public Motor Vehicle (PMV) Bus 12 in the area to navigate their route into the Rakatani Drive of Tokarara for swift and safe passage for buses and passengers to travel out of the active construction site.
