NCD Governor Powes Parkop and the National Capital District Commission continue efforts to push for a safer Port Moresby, especially for women and girls.
The Redvember Walk takes place on Sunday, November 10th between 6am and 8am, from Sir John Guise Stadium to Parliament House and back.
This walk is part of a 20-day campaign against gender-based violence, with events and outreach from November 20 to December 10.
The campaign encourages community awareness and respect for human rights in support of women and girls.
In addition to serving as the NCD Governor, Parkop holds significant roles within Parliament, chairing the Permanent Parliamentary Committee on Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment (GEWE), a position he has used to advocate for policies addressing gender-based violence (GBV) and improving institutional support for women’s rights.
Under his leadership, the committee aims to ensure that government structures effectively support and protect women and girls across the country.
This includes holding inquiries, such as one in May 2023, to evaluate the functionality of laws and policies related to gender issues.
Beyond these responsibilities, Parkop is actively involved in initiatives to improve the law-and-order situation, as well as economic diversification in Port Moresby.
His policies target youth engagement, crime reduction, and enhanced city amenities to make Port Moresby a safer, more attractive hub for tourism and investment.
