The Morata Neighborhood Watch has recently expanded its operations to the Morata Community Hall on Christmas 25th December 2024, making it the first initiative of its kind in Morata Community Hall.
The New community hall Initiative includes a robust team of 30 members including 5 volunteers, with over 15 patrollers assigned specifically to the Community Hall and surrounding areas, especially at night.
Their presence remains crucial given the neighborhood’s dangerous history as a former community prone to minor and major crimes.
The location, now a significant entry and exit point for the suburb, has benefited from the increased number of patrollers and was complemented by five dedicated volunteers who are stationed at the center to ensure safety and maintain order.
One community resident from Wabag also part of the Community Hall MNW Mr. John Yanis emphasized the importance of public cooperation, noting how the community’s support has fostered a sense of security. This initiative has already created a positive impact, with residents feeling safer and more comfortable in their environment.
Acknowledging the negative history of Morata, Mr. Yanis stated that their presence is crucial for the wellbeing or security of the residents nearby, especially during this time before and after New Year. He highlighted the importance of security at the community hall and plans to stay committed until New Year’s Eve as advised by the MNW Head Mr. Jerremiah Pera.
Despite its success, challenges remain including the legacy of lawlessness and ongoing community tensions. However, the Neighborhood Watch’s proactive approach, supported by the local Waigani police and community members, has set a precedent for other neighborhoods. This collaboration highlights the transformative power of grassroots efforts in improving public safety.
