MISUNDERSTANDING LEADS TO WARDENS & BUS OPERATORS CLASH

A misunderstanding early this morning escalated into a physical altercation between city wardens and the Route 17 bus operators along Waigani Drive near to the Islander- Boroko Motors bus stop, causing disruption to morning traffic.

NCD police on site reported that the incident occurred around 6 a.m. An elderly passenger from Vulupindi Haus boarded a Route 17 bus at Gordons. Upon disembarking, he paid a 50 toea, which reportedly angered the Bus 17 Boss Crew.

Witnesses said the crew shouted at the man despite his age, prompting other passengers to intervene and defend him. The confrontation quickly escalated into a physical fight involving the Bus 17 Boss Crew, passengers, and bystanders.

Following the scuffle, a Bus 17 crew member reportedly claimed that he had been attacked by city wardens, prompting tension along the Waigani route.

However, authorities later confirmed that city wardens were not on duty at the time, as their shifts begin at 8 a.m. Police said no wardens were involved in the early morning altercation.

Both parties are expected to meet at Hohola Police Station today to clarify the misunderstanding and resolve the matter peacefully.

Police have urged commuters and bus operators to remain calm while investigations continue.
