Former journalist and Divine Word University (DWU) lecturer, Patrick Matbob, has lauded the Media Council PNG (MCPNG) for reviving the prestigious Media Awards after more than a decade of dormancy.
In a recent statement, Matbob emphasized that the awards play a crucial role in recognizing the hard work of journalists in sharing impactful stories, while also showcasing exemplary journalistic achievements from local winners. He believes these awards will serve as valuable teaching tools for university students pursuing careers in media.
“The Media Awards not only acknowledge the dedication of journalists but also highlight local excellence, providing students with a clear example of what they should aspire to,” said Matbob.
“As a lecturer, I want my students to see award-winning local work and understand what they should strive for, rather than relying solely on foreign examples.”
Matbob expressed confidence that the reintroduction of the awards would raise the standards of journalism in Papua New Guinea. He believes it will inspire both current journalists and the next generation by rewarding quality work and strengthening the credibility of the profession.
“The return of the awards after so many years is a significant step forward for journalism in PNG. It will uplift industry standards, recognize excellence, and motivate younger journalists, particularly those in journalism schools,” Matbob added.
He also called for the awards to be held on a regular basis to ensure continuous improvement in journalistic practices across the country.
“It will improve practice, recognize excellence, and inspire younger journalists, especially those in journalism schools,” he said.
The revival of the Media Awards marks an important turning point for PNG’s media industry, as it balances traditional values with the modern challenges posed by online news metrics and AI-driven content.
The Media Council PNG’s decision to bring back the awards is expected to significantly impact the future of journalism in the country, providing a platform for recognizing the vital role of local journalists in shaping public discourse.
The MCPNG Media Awards night was held on Saturday 3rd May at the Stanley Hotel in Port Moresby city.
