The Mauberema Conservation Center in the Sinesine Yonggomugl District of the Chimbu Province, is now in the process of establishing a seed multiplication bank.
The objective of this seed multiplication bank is to improve food security in the area and to assist the conservation center’s livelihood programs.
The conservation center is undertaking this in collaboration with the Simbu Provincial Government, through the Food Security Division of the Provincial Department of Agriculture and Livestock and the Food & Agriculture Organization (FAO).
Founder of the Mauberema Conservation Center, Mr. Moses Kerry said officers from these organizations traveled out to the area recently, to carry out an assessment and found the environment ideal to establish a seed multiplication bank.
“We were given seeds for a range of foods including corn, beans and cassava, as well as gardening tools.”
From the initial seed multiplication project, Mauberema Conservation Center will then supply seeds to the surrounding Community Based Organizations, to plant and harvest their own food.
