Madang Mayors rugby league pre- season 9’s cup has gone into its second round this weekend at the Ron-Albert oval in Madang after the game was officially kicked off last week. It has been almost four years since Madang rugby league season was stopped due to the covid-19 outbreak causing lawlessness to rise. With the initiative of the new Madang Town Mayor the Madang Rugby league was fortunate to host a pre-season 9's cup. Madang Town Mayor and Major sponsor, Peter Masia Yalsy stressed that Madang needs more sporting activities in the province so that more youths will involve themselves into playing sports, thus, will help minimize law and order issues in Madang. Mayor Yalsi said that he wants to revive sporting spirit in Madang as he sees that most of the youths that involve in illegal activities are potential and talented athletes. “With this initiative, this will help involve more youths to take part in something good for themselves.” He said so far there has been assistance from business houses and corporate businesses, including Lae Snax company, Paradise Food Limited, and Goodman Fielders who have greatly assisted us with cash and merchandise. There are total of twelve teams participating in the tournament with four female teams and eight male teams playing in three divisions of Senior men's and women's division and B grade division.
