Kumulsoft, a remarkable journey of how a simple idea transformed into a software solution that is redefining asset management in Papua New Guinea (PNG).
In an exclusive interview with PNG HAUSBUNG, Mr. Paul Muingnepe, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) shared the story of Kumulsoft, of how it began in the early 2000s.
Mr. Muingnepe’s story began in 2007 when he worked as a Fixed Assets Officer at the University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG). Tasked with overseeing the university’s vast portfolio of assets, he faced significant challenges during audits.
“I couldn’t pin down the actual existence of the assets properly,” he revealed.
“We were using spreadsheets, but there was no proper system to track them.”
This frustration led Mr. Muingnepe to take matters into his own hands. Using Microsoft Access, he created a basic database to streamline the asset management process. What started as a simple tool quickly showed immense potential for broader application.
Recognizing the need for a more comprehensive solution, Mr. Muingnepe spent years refining his initial creation. Partnering with skilled software engineers, he transformed the desktop application into a sophisticated, web-based platform that could track assets in real-time and meet global standards.
Today, Kumulsoft is trusted by government departments and private companies alike for its efficiency, transparency, and adaptability. Its latest version of Fix Asset Management Solution (FAMS), 2.16, features cloud capabilities and ensures compliance with the evolving demands of modern asset management.
“We’re building from a global perspective so that when changes happen, we are not affected but are moving with the trend,” Mr. Muingnepe explained during the interview.
Building a software company in Papua New Guinea, has its unique challenges. High development costs, maintaining global standards, and gaining the trust of clients were just some of the obstacles Mr. Muingnepe faced.
“Software development is demanding,” Mr. Muingnepe said.
“People often underestimate the time, focus, and effort needed to build lasting solutions.”
Yet, his perseverance has paid off with Kumulsoft as now seen as a symbol of Papua New Guinea’s potential for technological innovation, proving that local solutions can compete on the global stage.
When asked about his advice for aspiring entrepreneurs, Mr. Muingnepe answered, “Put your head down and put in the work. Every great innovation starts with solving a real problem.”
Kumulsoft is not only about developing software, but the company also serves as a beckon to empower the next generation of engineers and software developers to embrace technology and innovation.
Mr. Muingnepe vision a future where local entrepreneurs are inspired to tackle challenges with creativity and determination, just as he did.
From a modest idea born out of necessity to a software solution that drives change, Kumulsoft’s story is a testament to the power of innovation and resilience.
The interview highlights Mr. Muingnepe journey through years of hard work and the limitless potential for PNG’s tech industry on the global stage.
