This
position is responsible for managing and overseeing PNGFM newsroom, setting
editorial strategies, assigning stories, ensuring compliance with journalistic
standards and broadcasting regulations, and leading staff to produce
high-quality, timely and accurate news content for radio, website and digital
platforms. This role demands a comprehensive skill set to manage a news team,
oversee all content and maintain PNGFM’s journalistic integrity.
•
Bachelor’s degree in journalism or communications with at least 10 years
newsroom experience
• Strong leadership and team management skills, with at least 5 years’
experience in a leadership role.
• Excellent command of written and spoken English
• Proven experience and knowledge of Media Law and commitment to ethical
reporting
(Papua New Guinea Constitution, Media Laws and Regulation, Media Code of
Ethics)

Membership with PNG Media Association
• Ability to make quick, sound decisions under pressure in a fast-paced
environment
• Strong management, mentoring, and interpersonal skills to lead a team
effectively.
• Familiarity with audio editing software, digital audio storage, and online
content management systems.
• Knowledge of broadcasting technologies and analytics tools for news
production and engagement
Editorial and Content Management
• Develop
and implement the overall news coverage strategy, including selecting which
stories to prioritize and how they are presented.
• Setting
the news agenda, approving story assignments, and making final editorial
decisions.
• Direct
the gathering, writing, and production of news content for broadcasts,
podcasts, and the station's website.
• Review
and edit news material submitted by reporters to ensure accuracy, balance,
ensuring all news content adheres to journalistic standards, accuracy, and
ethical guidelines.
• Stay
informed on local, national, and international events by monitoring various
news sources, including wire services and police scanners.
• Oversee the creation and delivery of news broadcasts and digital content, special news features and documentaries.
Staff Supervision and Development
•
Recruit, hire, and train newsroom staff, including reporters and editorial
team.
•
Supervise reporters and other news personnel, providing guidance, mentoring,
and performance evaluations.
• Foster a collaborative and inclusive newsroom culture that encourages creative and compelling storytelling.
Operational and Administrative Management
• Manage
the news department's budget and allocate resources effectively for staffing
and equipment.
• Work
closely with other departments, such as program directors, traffic, sales, and
marketing to coordinate content and programming, and align news content with
organizational goals.
• Ensure
that all news broadcasts and operations comply with federal, state, and local
broadcasting regulations.
• Build
and maintain relationships with key news sources, community leaders, and the
public.
• Serve
as a spokesperson for the station on occasion.
