The Port Moresby city hosted the 2025 International Women’s Day Walk over the weekend, uniting thousands of participants from around the city.
The Active City Development Program (ACDP) proudly hosted the event through the Prime Minister’s Office under the theme “Accelerate Action” on Saturday 8th March 2025, with support together from government agencies, diplomatic communities, private sector partners, civil society organizations, University Students, and community groups to celebrate the achievements of women and advocate for gender equality.
The event had the presence of NCD Governor Powes Parkop, a steadfast champion of women’s rights and gender equality.
Governor Parkop emphasized the need for a safe, inclusive, and equitable city for women, advocating for their role in decision-making and nation-building. He announced major funding commitments, including K17 million for the City Warden Program, K20 million for CCTV installation, K2 million for the Safe City Program, and K3 million for GBV initiatives. These investments highlight his dedication to ensuring women’s safety, inclusion, and empowerment in Port Moresby.
The event featured performances by UPNG Arts Students and PNG Circus, showcasing the power of art in driving social change. Gratitude was extended to Japan International Cooperation Agency for sponsoring the event, with support from the UN, Australia, and the diplomatic community, highlighting the collective commitment to gender equality.
The active participation of key government agencies, including the Department of Community Development, the Prime Minister’s Department, PNG Correctional Services, and the NCD Provincial Health Authority, showcased a unified effort to advance women’s rights and well-being. ACDP is proud to have brought together a diverse group of stakeholders, reinforcing the power of collaboration in creating a city where women are safe, respected, and empowered.
The incredible support from government and corporate arms including individuals who were present, established a successful 2025 International Women’s Day, standing as a testament of potential towards building a brighter, more inclusive future for Port Moresby and beyond.
