GOVERNOR’S CUP DIRECTOR EMBRACE POLICE SECURITY DURING TOURNAMENT

The Director of the NCD Governor's Cup Tournament, Mr. Billy Aki has welcomed the support of NCD police to uphold a safe and secure Port Moresby city.

During the tournament launch on Friday, December 19th, 2025, Mr. Aki recognized and thanked Acting Assistant Commissioner Benjamin Turi for the efforts of the police throughout the capital.

Acknowledging the growing impact of the annual Governors Cup, Mr. Aki highlighted the privilege of police presences especially for Christmas and New Year, but also to safeguard the wellbeing of the public at the three venues of the Governor’s Cup Games.

In addition, he also emphasized the anticipated collaboration with NCD Police and the Governor's Cup Management to monitor and neutralize any harmful individual or crowd during the tournament on and off the field.

Mr. Aki further stated his committed to keeping the youths occupied while embracing their spirit through rugby league and soccer.

He also expressed the tournament aims to promote healthy lifestyles and encourage players to be good citizens.

“We will start together and stay together until the end of this tournament.”

This year’s Governor’s Cup will share three locations to host the games for both the women and men’s division.

The University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG) will offer three ovals for soccer and rugby league, while the Waigani Koni Tiger Oval and Hohola Lareva Oval to carry out rugby league matches.

The rugby league portion of the Governor's Cup features 64 teams playing for a K100, 000 prize money.

Meanwhile, the soccer league has 40 teams in the men’s division and 10 teams in the women’s division.
