Team PNG to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games will see a boost in preparations for the Tokyo Olympic Games with the announcement on the sales of the Trukai Fun T-shirts.
PNG Olympic Committee (PNGOC) and its major sponsor Trukai Industries Limited will be selling the 2020 Trukai Fun Run t-shirts at participating outlets in Port Moresby, Lae and Mt Hagen.
PNGOC President, Sir John Dawanincura said the Trukai Fun Run has been generating funds to send athletes overseas for international sporting events representing PNG for over twenty years.
Unfortunately, due to Covid 19, they couldn’t stage the annual Fun Run events for two consecutive years.
Dawanincura said the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games could not proceed last year due to Covid-19.
The games will however take place this year from 23 July -8 August with stringent Covid-19 protocols in place for all athletes and officials.
He said the Olympic dream is the aspiration of all elite athletes and is an opportunity of a lifetime for those who have compete in it and they are determined to send Team PNG to participate at this prestigious sporting event.
He thanked organisations who have been strong supporters in the past of this fundraiser and appealed to both the corporate and public sectors to support Team PNG get to the Tokyo Olympic Games by purchasing Trukai fun run t-shirts.
“You’ll still have the opportunity to print your company or brand logo on the front of the t-shirt,” Dawanincura said.
“By purchasing a Trukai Fun Run T-shirt, we can all be a part of Team PNG and the Olympic dream,” he said.
“It is our aim to provide that opportunity for our nation’s elite athletes but we need funds to make that dream a reality. We have 65,000 t-shirts that we will be selling through retail partners for only K10 per shirt.
Stop and Shop outlets in Port Moresby will be the first shop to sell the fun run t-shirts as well as Media Partners and Brian Bell. More information about the outlets and locations will be shared with the public come next week Monday 3rd May 2021.
A t-shirt purchased will come with a raffle ticket to go into the draw to win great prizes from PNGOC’s other partners like Brian Bell, Theodist and Coral Sea Hotels.
Trukai Industries Limited Marketing Manager, Maryanne Tom said as a responsible corporate citizen, Trukai will adhere to the government’s regulations and protocols surrounding events during Covid-19 and there is no fun run event because everyone’s safety is paramount.
“It is unfortunate that we won’t be able to hold the Trukai Fun Run event again for the second year. The fun run event is family oriented and we’re proud to say one of the largest social events not only in PNG but the South Pacific region. Since the last event in 2019 we’ve seen PNG turn up on the day of the event in droves to show their support to Team PNG and although there is no event this year, we’re hoping to see this same Melanesian spirit continue.”
With the support of the Trukai Fun Run, Team PNG has been able to attend five Commonwealth Games, five Pacific Mini Games, five Pacific Games and this year’s Tokyo Games will make it its seventh Olympic Games.
