The 34th annual Senior Education Officers Conference begins in Popondetta, Northern Province today, bringing together over 100 senior officers, government representatives, church leaders, and development partners.
The week-long event will run from September 22nd to 26th at Popondetta Secondary School.
This year’s theme, “Accessible Quality Education Pathways for All”, is drawn from focus area six of the National Education Plan 2020–2029.
Discussions will cover vocational teacher education, Flexible Open Distance Education (FODE), inclusive and special education, the 1-6-6 school restructure, and teacher training programs.
Provincial Education Advisors are also expected to present updates on phasing out elementary schools and Grade 8 selections.
Education Secretary Dr. Uke Kombra said the talks are vital to ensure every child in Papua New Guinea has a fair opportunity to succeed.
He noted that while many students complete Grade 12 and move to universities, others pursue different but equally meaningful pathways through FODE, vocational schools, technical training, or literacy programs.
Dr. Kombra emphasized the importance of accredited trade courses in secondary schools, vocational training, and the role of the National Literacy and Awareness Secretariat.
He said these pathways must be strengthened as the country celebrates 50 years of Independence and prepares for the next 50.
Minister for Education Lucas Dekena will officiate the launch of the conference.
