East New Britain Province’s education sector this week received infrastructure projects worth close to K10 million kina funded by the European Union through the Papua New Guinea -European Union Development Cooperation.
Raval and Kabaira Technical Vocational Education Centers are part of the ten TVET centers in the country that have benefited from the Human Resource Development Programme Phase 2 (HRDP.2), a programme under the 10th European Development Fund (EDF).
The HRDP.2, implemented by the National Department of Education aims to promote the development of human resources by improving the education system. The implementing agency works in close consultation with the Department of National Planning and Monitoring as the coordinating authority which provides support and guidance in the entire lifespan – of the project starting with negotiations in 2014 and ending with commissioning /inaugurations this year (2021).
Raval TVET received infrastructure projects worth K2.9 million, consisting of 3 workshop buildings for trade skills in plumbing, welding and metal fabrication and carpentry & joinery, 2 dormitories, 1 administration building with library and Information Technology laboratories equipped with computers and printers.
Kabaira Girls Technical Vocational School received infrastructure projects worth K6.9 million. This consists of 1 workshop for tourism and hospitality, 1 double story dormitory, 2 double classrooms, 7 single teacher houses and 2 ablution blocks, one with laundry facilities.
The infrastructure component of HRDP.2 was delivered by Rhodes PNG, a national company contracted to build the infrastructure.
Raval and Kabaira have also benefited from the state-of-the-art facilities, a component under the same programme, worth K8.9 million kina for all the 10 centers.
All workshops are fully knitted with tools and equipment for trade skills. And like all other centers that have benefited this programme, Raval and Kabaira have all designated tools and equipment in these workshops including tourism and hospitality workshop.
All infrastructure and tools and equipment for Raval and Kabaira were officially inaugurated on Thursday the 5th of August and Friday the 6th of August 2021 respectively.
On hand to grace the occasion was Jimmy Ugoro, Education Minister, Dr. Uke Kombra Education Secretary, Michael Kumung, Deputy Secretary Policy and Planning, Department of National Planning and Monitoring.
East New Britain national and provincial leaders including Nakikus Konga-East New Britain Governor, Member for Gazalle and Minister for Health Hon. Jelta Wong and Arch Bishop of Rabaul Arch Diocese, Bishop Rochus Tetamai were also present to witness the event.
Raval and Kabaira are the 7th and 8th TVET centres to be inaugurated which now leaves Laiagam and Pompbus in Enga to be inaugurated. Centers already inaugurated are Yawasoro in East Sepik Province, Morata and Badili in National Capital District, Umi and Bulolo in Morobe Province, Kamaliki in Eastern Highlands Province.
