While most schools throughout the country resorted to a traditional dissemination of printed handouts for students to complete during the 3-week long National Isolation Strategy and a further week of school holidays which greatly interfered with the first term of the academic year, others opted for a more modern utilization of online resources.
The students at Caritas Technical Secondary School in the NCD are now full swing into term 2 lessons thanks to Edmodo, an online e-learning tool which was first brought into play by the all-girls school during the initial 2020 COVID-19 lockdown.
School Principal, Mrs Wilma Kalimet, said with the utilization of Edmodo, most lessons which might still be dragging her students back at this time were able to be covered, leaving a narrow turnaround time for when classes resumed.
“We got students to create their online accounts and with that we were able to have our lessons online.”
“We prepared handouts, notes and activities for the students to do so they access it through Edmodo, work on it and after working on the handouts, they print and dropped them off at the school which their teachers were able to mark.
“I’d say we did not lose much of our lessons during the isolation period because of these online lessons.”
Mrs Kalimet further added that the isolation period however did manage to disrupt the end of term exams for her students which had to be held off until classes resumed.
