The Cook Islands maintained their dominance in the second half, shutting out the PNG Orchids with three unanswered tries to seal a convincing victory in the Pacific Championships Bowl women’s clash this afternoon in Port Moresby city.

The Orchids returned from halftime with renewed energy and aggression, showing intent through strong carries and improved defensive pressure. However, a lack of connection between the halves and missed opportunities in attack saw their momentum fade. Veteran Emily Veivers stepped into the halves to help direct play, but her efforts were not enough to break through the Cook Islands’ disciplined defensive line.

The Cook Islands capitalised on every Orchids error, turning loose balls and incomplete sets into scoring opportunities. While their defensive intensity wasn’t as fiery as the Orchids’, their structure and communication near the goal line made them difficult to break.

Halves Chantay Kiria Ratu and Lydia Tarua-Quefley orchestrated their side’s attack with precision, combining seamlessly with the backs to stretch PNG’s defence. Their quick passes and fluid movement created gaps across the field, while captain and fullback Kiana Takairangi led from the back with confident kick returns and strong positional play.

The second half saw tries from Memory Paiai in the 42nd minute, Kerethitina Matua in the 59th, and Paulina Morris Ponga, who completed her hat-trick in the 65th minute.

Despite flashes of promise from the Orchids, the Cook Islands’ composure, teamwork, and ability to convert pressure into points proved the difference — securing them a well-deserved 34–6 win.
