BRAZIL SEEKS TO ESTABLISH STRONG TIES WITH PNG

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva looks to establish stronger ties with Papua New Guinea (PNG) by opening an embassy in the country.

President Lula revealed this when meeting with PNG Prime Minister James Marape at the margins of COP30 at Belém, Brazil.

The Brazilian leader proposed opening a Brazilian embassy in Port Moresby to strengthen diplomatic engagement, trade, and technical cooperation. He said this would pave the way for collaboration in agriculture, renewable energy, and scientific research.

“It is time we expand our ties beyond climate discussions,” Lula said.

“We can deepen cooperation in trade, health, education, and energy. Brazil is ready to work with Papua New Guinea on new opportunities that will benefit both our peoples.”

President Lula also suggested sending his Minister of Economy to PNG for future consultations with PNG’s economic team, signaling Brazil’s intention to build a comprehensive partnership in energy, agribusiness, and technology.

The President expressed this after Prime Minister Marape proposed a new phase of partnership, including:

• Opening a Papua New Guinea diplomatic mission in Brazil,

• Inviting Brazil to establish an embassy in Port Moresby, and

• Encouraging business and government cooperation in agriculture, energy, and technology.

“We invite Brazilian companies—especially in agriculture and energy—to invest in PNG,” Prime Minister Marape told President Lula.

“Your agribusiness strength can support our move toward becoming a food-secure exporting nation.”

Marape said both countries could collaborate on tropical agriculture and rural development, with Brazil’s success in sustainable farming serving as a model for PNG.
