Deputy Controller of the PNG COVID-19 National Pandemic Response Dr Daoni Esorom announced today that six people at the National Control Centre in Port Moresby have tested positive for COVID-19. He said none of the six infected staff were vaccinated and there was no cross-infection to vaccinated staff who remain safe and COVID-19 free. The Papua New Guinea Defence Force confirms that a soldier passed away yesterday in Mt Hagen after a fatal road accident. Late 815200, Private Lembo, Leonard, 27 is from Pausa in Wapenamanda District of Enga Province. The deceased died upon impact following a penetrative chest injury resulting in air leaking and bleeding into the lung cavity. Acting Chief of Defence Force Commodore Philip Polewara conveyed his condolence to the family of the deceased. Three others are in a stable at the Mt Hagen General Hospital. Police in the Australian cities of Melbourne and Sydney have clashed with thousands of people protesting against Covid lockdowns. In Melbourne, mounted officers used pepper spray when elements of a 4,000-strong rally broke through police lines. Police arrested 218 people, and at least seven officers were injured. Football’s world governing body Fifa has written to a number of governments to request the emergency evacuation of female players from Afghanistan. Players are said to fear for their lives following the Taliban’s takeover of the Afghan capital Kabul. Players’ organisation Fifpro is also calling for help.
